What carpenter ants are
The big black ants marching across your kitchen counter after dark, or the winged ones showing up at a spring window, are almost certainly carpenter ants — genus Camponotus, and in Northeast Wisconsin most often the black carpenter ant, Camponotus pennsylvanicus. They are the largest ants in the state, and they earn their name honestly: they carve smooth nest galleries into wood. But the name misleads a lot of homeowners into thinking the ants are eating their house. They aren’t. Carpenter ants excavate wood strictly to make room for the colony, and they haul the shavings back out. Their diet is something else entirely.
This distinction is the key to everything that follows. Because carpenter ants don’t eat wood, you can’t starve them out of a structure, and because they prefer wood that moisture has already softened, they are as much a symptom of a water problem as a pest in their own right. A carpenter ant infestation is very often the house telling you it has a leak. Treat the ants without finding the water, and you’ve done half the job.
Wisconsin sits well north of serious termite range, so carpenter ants are the region’s principal wood-destroying insect. They work slower than termites, but a colony left alone for years in a sill plate, a subfloor, or a deck post can do genuine structural damage. They are common precisely because the conditions they favor — mature trees, older homes, and a climate with plenty of moisture and freeze-thaw cycles — describe most of the Clintonville area exactly.
How do you identify carpenter ants?
Carpenter ant workers are large, from about a quarter inch up to half an inch, and they come in a range of sizes within a single colony — entomologists call this being polymorphic, with minor, media, and major workers all present. Most are uniformly black, though some species and castes show a dark red or brownish thorax. Two features separate them from other big ants: viewed from the side, the top of the thorax is evenly, smoothly rounded (not lumpy or angled), and the waist has a single node (one bump) rather than two.
The winged reproductives — swarmers — are larger still and are frequently mistaken for termite swarmers. The way to tell them apart matters: carpenter ants have a pinched waist, bent (elbowed) antennae, and front wings noticeably longer than the hind wings. Termite swarmers have a straight, thick waist, straight antennae, and four wings all the same length. In practice, if you’re in Northeast Wisconsin and you find large black winged insects at a window in spring, carpenter ants are the overwhelmingly likely answer.
Don’t confuse carpenter ants with the smaller nuisance ants that trail across counters for crumbs — pavement ants, odorous house ants, and the like. Those are a housekeeping annoyance. Carpenter ants are a structural concern, and the size and season usually make the difference obvious.
The size range within one colony is itself a clue. Carpenter ant colonies are polymorphic, meaning workers come in a spread of sizes — small minors, mid-sized medias, and large majors — that divide the labor, with the biggest workers defending the nest and handling large prey while the smaller ones tend brood and forage. So if you’re seeing black ants that vary noticeably in size all coming from the same area, that variation points to carpenter ants rather than a nuisance species, whose workers are usually uniform. The majors, with their oversized heads, are the ones people describe as looking almost intimidating up close.
How do carpenter ants live and breed in Wisconsin?
A carpenter ant colony is a slow, deliberate operation, and understanding its structure is what makes control possible.
The colony begins with a single fertilized queen who founds a nest, usually in damp wood, and raises her first brood of workers. The parent nest — the one containing the queen, her eggs, and the youngest larvae — requires consistently high humidity, so it is typically located outdoors in something wet and rotting: a hollow tree, a stump, a buried log, a woodpile, or the base of a fence post. This is a critical point for treatment. The nest doing the visible damage in your wall may not contain the queen at all.
Here’s why. The queen lays eggs on two schedules. Once eggs hatch, workers carry the older, tougher larvae out to satellite nests where the humidity is lower and the space is drier — and those satellites can be inside your walls, subfloor, or trim. A satellite nest holds workers, older larvae, and pupae but usually no queen, and it can survive independently of the parent for long stretches. So a mature colony is really a network: a queen-bearing parent nest outdoors, connected by forager trails to one or several satellite nests, some of which may be inside your house. Kill the ants in one satellite and the parent keeps replenishing the network.
Colonies grow slowly. Extension entomologists note that a carpenter ant nest usually doesn’t produce its first swarm until it’s three or four years old and contains several thousand ants. That’s why the appearance of winged swarmers indoors is such a meaningful signal — it means an established, mature colony has been operating on or in your property for years. The spring egg batch, given special care, produces those winged reproductives; the late-summer batch produces workers that emerge the following year.
The connection between the outdoor parent and the indoor satellites is a physical trail, and carpenter ants will travel a surprising distance along it — a nest in a backyard tree or a woodpile at the property line can supply satellites a hundred feet away, with the foragers following the path of least resistance: along utility lines, fence rails, tree limbs that touch the roof, deck ledgers, and the tops of foundation walls. This is why a house with no obvious indoor nest can still swarm with foragers every night; they’re commuting in from an outdoor colony and, over time, establishing a satellite once they find soft wood inside. It’s also why cutting those physical bridges — the branch touching the eave, the woodpile against the wall — is such an effective part of control.
Diet is the other half of the biology. Workers feed on carbohydrates — sap, fruit, and especially honeydew farmed from aphids and treehoppers — while the developing larvae need protein, which the workers supply by hunting live and scavenging dead insects. Indoors, that translates to a taste for sweets and grease: they’ll work a spill of syrup or pet food, and this appetite is exactly what modern baiting exploits, because the foragers carry bait back and feed it to the brood and queen they’d never otherwise expose. None of it involves eating wood, which is the single most important thing to keep straight — you cannot bait or poison the wood, only the ants, and you cannot starve them out of a structure by denying them food.
When are carpenter ants active in Northeast Wisconsin?
Carpenter ant activity tracks the Wisconsin year closely. Through the cold months the colony sits in a dormant, semi-frozen state; the ants tolerate winter well but do little. As the ground warms in April and May, foraging resumes, and this is when mature colonies release their spring swarmers — the winged males and new queens leaving to mate and, if lucky, found new colonies. Swarmers at your windows in May or early June are the season’s loudest alarm.
Through summer, foraging peaks. Carpenter ants forage mainly at night, following established scent trails from the nest to food and back, which is why you often see them most on kitchen counters or along foundations after dark. This is the best time to observe trails and backtrack them toward a nest. By late summer the colony is at full size, and activity tapers into fall as the ants prepare to overwinter.
The seasonal tell that matters most for diagnosis is winter. Large black ants active indoors during December, January, or February are not foraging in from outside — nothing is foraging outside in a Wisconsin winter. Their presence in the living space in the cold months means a nest is living inside the heated envelope of your home, warm enough to keep the ants moving. That single observation often settles the question of whether you have an indoor satellite nest.
One more piece of seasonal timing is worth flagging for older homes: ice dams. Northeast Wisconsin winters build heavy ice at the eaves, and the backed-up meltwater it forces under shingles is a classic source of the roofline moisture damage carpenter ants love. A home that suffers ice dams year after year is steadily manufacturing the soft, wet wood a colony needs, high up where it’s hard to inspect. So carpenter ants at the roofline and in upper walls are often a downstream symptom of a winter ice-dam problem, and the two are worth thinking about together.
How do you know you have carpenter ants?
The clearest signs, roughly in order of certainty:
- Frass — piles of what looks like coarse sawdust below wood, but with tiny insect parts, bits of dead ants, and dead insect fragments mixed in. Carpenter ants push this debris out of small slit-like openings (“windows”) in the wood. Clean sawdust means a tool; frass with insect parts means an active nest above or behind it.
- Large black ants indoors, especially repeatedly and especially in winter.
- Winged swarmers emerging indoors, usually at windows in spring.
- A faint, dry rustling sound in walls at night, which is the sound of a large colony working — audible in quiet rooms with big nests.
- Wood that sounds hollow or feels soft when probed, particularly around known moisture areas: under windows, around plumbing, at the roofline, in crawlspace framing, and in decks and porch posts.
Because carpenter ants concentrate where water has been, the sign hunt and the leak hunt are the same search.
What damage do carpenter ants cause?
Carpenter ants damage a home by hollowing its structural and finish wood over time. The galleries are clean and smooth, almost sanded-looking, and follow the softer grain of the wood — unlike the mud-packed, soil-flecked tunnels of termites, which are lined with dirt. If you open a piece of infested wood and the tunnels are clean and free of soil, that points to carpenter ants; if they’re packed with mud and debris, think termite (rare this far north) or old moisture rot. A colony that works a sill plate, a floor joist, a header, or a deck post for several years can compromise it. Because the ants prefer wood that’s already moisture-damaged, the ant damage often compounds rot that’s already underway, and the two together can turn a small leak into a structural repair. The pace is slow, which cuts both ways: you have time to catch it, but an unnoticed colony can also do years of quiet work before anyone sees a swarmer. Carpenter ants don’t sting or spread disease, so the risk here is to the building, not to your health.
Why doesn’t DIY work on carpenter ants?
Carpenter ants defeat over-the-counter control for structural reasons, not for lack of effort.
The core problem is the nest network. The ants you see are foragers, a fraction of the colony, and killing them with a spray does nothing to the queen in the outdoor parent nest or the brood in a satellite you can’t see. The colony simply replaces the foragers. Even a bait or spray that dents one satellite leaves the parent producing more.
Worse, repellent sprays can cause a colony to bud — sensing a threat, the colony splits and relocates part of itself, so instead of eliminating the problem you’ve multiplied the number of nests. Homeowners who spray a trail and then find ants in two new rooms a month later have usually done exactly this.
And DIY almost never addresses the moisture source, which is the whole reason the ants are there. Kill every ant on the counter and leave the roof leak, and a new colony will find the same soft wood next year. Effective control requires finding the nests — plural — treating the colony at its source with the right non-repellent products or baits, and correcting the water problem. That’s a diagnostic job as much as a treatment job.

How do you keep carpenter ants out?
Because carpenter ants are drawn by moisture and reach the house along physical bridges, prevention is mostly about drying the wood and cutting the bridges:
Fix roof, gutter, and plumbing leaks promptly, and correct grading and drainage that keep the foundation and crawlspace damp. Replace wood that’s already rotted or moisture-damaged rather than leaving it as an invitation. Keep firewood, lumber, and mulch off the ground and away from the house — woodpiles against a wall are a classic parent-nest-to-satellite bridge. Trim back tree limbs and shrubs that touch the roof or siding, since branches are highways from an outdoor nest to your roofline. Store firewood outside and bring in only what you’ll burn. Keep basements and crawlspaces ventilated and dry. And seal the gaps and penetrations that let foragers in — the same exclusion work that helps with every other pest.
Do those things and you make your home a poor prospect for a colony that could otherwise take years to notice.
It helps to think of prevention as two jobs: keep the wood dry so it never becomes attractive, and cut the bridges so an outdoor colony can’t reach whatever wood you do have. The dry-wood half is really just good home maintenance — the same gutter, roof, grading, and caulking upkeep that prevents rot — which is why carpenter ant prevention and moisture management are effectively the same project. The bridge-cutting half is landscaping: keep vegetation off the walls, wood off the ground, and limbs off the roof. A home that stays dry and isn’t physically connected to the surrounding trees and woodpiles is one carpenter ants have a hard time colonizing, no matter how many nests are out in the woodlot.
