When someone calls about ants, the first thing we need to sort out is which problem they actually have, because “ants” covers two situations that could hardly be more different. One is a nuisance. The other can quietly take money out of the value of your house.
The first and far more common problem is nuisance ants — pavement ants, odorous house ants, and their relatives — trailing indoors after food and moisture. These are the little ants you find marching along a counter edge, ringing the base of the dishwasher, or filing in and out of a crack by the patio door. They are annoying, they get into the sugar and the pet food, and in large numbers they are genuinely unpleasant, but they are not eating your house. The fix is about breaking the colony and closing the doors, not about repairing structure.
The second problem is carpenter ants, and they are a different animal entirely. Carpenter ants are the most damaging structural insect in Northeast Wisconsin, for the simple reason that termites — the pest most of the country worries about — are rare this far north. That leaves carpenter ants as the insect most likely to be hollowing out the wood in a home around Clintonville, Shawano, or the Chain O’ Lakes. They tunnel into damp and damaged framing, sills, trim, decks, and window surrounds, and over the course of years they can turn sound structural wood into a honeycomb of galleries.

How to tell nuisance ants from carpenter ants
You do not need to be an entomologist to make the first call yourself. A few features separate the two groups quickly.
Size is the most obvious. Carpenter ants are big — the workers can run up to roughly half an inch, and a single colony produces workers of varying sizes, so you will often see large and small individuals together. Nuisance ants like pavement ants and odorous house ants are small and fairly uniform, on the order of an eighth of an inch. If the ant looks substantial enough that you notice it as an individual crossing the floor rather than as part of a faint line, you are probably looking at a carpenter ant.
Color helps too. Carpenter ants in our region are typically black or very dark, sometimes with a reddish or brownish cast to the midsection. They have a single node at the waist and an evenly rounded profile across the top of the thorax, but for a homeowner the size-and-color combination — large and dark — is the practical tell.
Season and location may be the most useful clue of all, and it is one anybody can read. Nuisance ants are warm-weather foragers; you see them from spring through fall when they are active outdoors and trailing in. Carpenter ants foraging from an outdoor nest follow a similar warm-season pattern. But if you are seeing large dark ants inside during the cold months — walking across a bathroom floor in December, showing up on a kitchen counter in February — that is not a forager wandering in from the yard, because ants outdoors are dormant in a Wisconsin winter. It means a nest is living inside the heated structure. Winter indoor sightings of big black ants are one of the strongest signals of an established indoor carpenter ant colony.
The extra signs confirm it. Coarse, sawdust-like frass pushed out below wood, faint rustling in the walls at night, and winged swarmers at the windows in spring all point to carpenter ants rather than nuisance species. We will come back to each of those, because they are how you find the nest.

Nuisance ants: why the trail keeps coming back
Let us deal with the common case first, because a lot of frustration comes from misunderstanding it. Most ant problems in area homes are nuisance species foraging indoors for food and water. Pavement ants nest under slabs, sidewalks, and driveways and leave those little piles of excavated soil at the cracks. Odorous house ants — named for the faint smell they give off when crushed — nest in all sorts of protected spots and have a strong taste for sweets. Both send out foragers along scent trails, and once a scout finds a reliable food or moisture source in your kitchen, it lays down a chemical trail that recruits the rest.
Here is the part homeowners get wrong. The ants you see on the counter are foragers, and foragers are a small, expendable fraction of the colony. The queen, the brood, and most of the workers are back in the nest, out of sight. When you wipe out the visible trail with a spray, you kill those foragers and the line disappears for a day — which feels like success — but the nest is untouched and simply sends out more. That is why the trail keeps coming back in the same spot no matter how many times you clean it up.
There is a second, sneakier failure mode. Many over-the-counter ant sprays are repellent, meaning the ants sense and avoid the treated area. With some species, spraying a repellent product onto a colony causes it to bud — the colony splits and relocates into several smaller nests to escape the irritant. You can turn one manageable nest into three scattered ones and genuinely make the problem harder to solve. Carpenter ant biology: what they are really doing in your walls
Carpenter ants earn a section of their own because almost everything about them is misunderstood, and the misunderstandings lead directly to failed treatments.
Start with the biggest one: carpenter ants do not eat wood. Termites eat wood — they digest the cellulose. Carpenter ants excavate it. They chew through wood to carve out smooth, clean galleries and tunnels for the colony to live in, and they carry the debris out and dump it rather than consuming it. Their actual food is elsewhere: outdoors they tend aphids and feed on the sweet honeydew the aphids produce, they scavenge dead insects, and indoors they will happily take the sweets, grease, and proteins in your kitchen. So a carpenter ant is not living off your studs — it is living in them, and eating from your pantry and your yard.
That distinction is not academic; it is diagnostic. Because they do not eat the wood, they have to get rid of it, and they do that by pushing it out of the nest as frass — a coarse, sawdust-like refuse of wood shavings mixed with insulation bits, dead ants, and other debris. Termites, by contrast, pack their tunnels with mud and soil. So when you find a pile of what looks like sawdust with no obvious source, and the galleries behind it are clean and smooth rather than muddy, you are looking at carpenter ants. The frass piles up right below the nest opening, which makes it one of the most reliable ways to find where they are.
Carpenter ants also strongly prefer wood that has been softened by moisture. Sound, dry, seasoned lumber is hard work to excavate; wood that has been dampened by a leak, condensation, or ground contact is far easier, and often already beginning to rot. Given a choice, a colony will nest in the wet wood every time. This single fact drives the entire strategy for controlling them, because it means a carpenter ant problem is almost always a moisture problem wearing an insect costume.
Finally, carpenter ants organize themselves across multiple nests. The colony is founded by a single queen in a parent nest, and that parent nest — with the queen and the young brood — is very often outdoors, in a tree, a stump, a root, a woodpile, or buried landscape timber. As the colony matures, it establishes satellite nests: outposts of workers and older larvae that can be located some distance from the parent, including inside your home. The ants you see indoors typically belong to a satellite nest. This is why treating carpenter ants is more than treating one spot: kill an indoor satellite and leave a thriving parent nest out in the yard, and the colony rebuilds. A real solution has to account for the whole network.
Moisture is the real driver

Because carpenter ants seek out wood softened by water, the map of where they nest is essentially a map of where a building stays damp. The usual culprits are familiar to anyone who has owned an older home in this climate:

- Condensation and poor ventilation, especially in crawlspaces and closed-up rooms, which keeps framing and joists damp even without an outright leak.
- Wood-to-soil contact — deck posts, porch supports, and siding that meets the ground — which wicks ground moisture straight up into the wood.
- Decks, porches, and steps exposed to rain and snow, where the wood cycles through wet and dry and slowly softens.
- Window and door frames where flashing or caulk has failed and water sneaks into the surround.
Every one of these creates exactly the soft, moist wood carpenter ants prefer, and every one of them tends to be hidden — behind trim, under a sink, inside a wall, beneath a deck. That is why finding the moisture source is a core part of the job, not a suggestion we tack on at the end. The local building stock at risk
Carpenter ants are not a random misfortune; certain kinds of buildings get them, and Northeast Wisconsin has a lot of those buildings. Knowing whether your home is a likely target tells you how vigilant to be.
Homes near mature trees and woodlots sit closest to the source. The parent colonies live out in the standing timber, the dead limbs, the stumps, and the leaf-littered ground of a woodlot, so a house at the edge of the woods has foraging carpenter ants at its doorstep all season. All those ants need is a way in and some damp wood to nest in, and the property offers a steady supply of colonies probing for both.
Cabins and seasonal properties around Iola, Manawa, the Chain O’ Lakes, and the Wolf River are prime carpenter ant territory, and they combine every risk factor. They sit in the woods and along the water, they are frequently log or timber built, they have decks and porches taking the full weather, and — critically — they sit empty for stretches, so a small roof or plumbing leak can keep a section of wall damp for months with nobody there to notice. A cabin that closes up wet in the fall and sits quiet is an open invitation. A deck is frequently the early-warning sign, and treating it and correcting its drainage can head off a bigger problem indoors.
The carpenter ant season in Northeast Wisconsin
Carpenter ants run on an annual rhythm, and reading it helps you know what a given sighting means and when to act.
Winter is when carpenter ants give themselves away indoors. Outdoors, ants are dormant in the cold, so any carpenter ants active inside during December, January, and February are living in a satellite nest within the heated structure — often near a warm spot like a chimney chase, a heat duct, or a sunny wall. Winter sightings are not strays; they are evidence of an indoor nest, and they are one of the best reasons to call, because they tell you the colony is already inside rather than just visiting.
Spring brings the swarmers. As the season warms, a mature colony produces winged reproductives — new queens and males — whose job is to fly off and found new colonies. When those swarmers appear indoors, clustering at windows and light fixtures trying to reach daylight, it is significant: a colony only produces swarmers once it has reached reproductive maturity, which takes a few years, so indoor swarmers mean a well-established indoor nest. Because termites are rare this far north, winged insects emerging inside a Wisconsin home in spring are almost always carpenter ants, not termites. Spring is also when overwintered colonies become active again and foraging picks back up.
Summer is peak foraging. The colony is fully active, workers are out along their trails day and night gathering food, and this is when you are most likely to see steady lines of large ants and to notice frass accumulating below nest sites. It is a good time to spot the trails that lead us back to the nests.
Fall sees the colony provisioning and slowing as temperatures drop, with the ants retreating into their nests to overwinter — including the satellite nests tucked into your warm walls, which sets up the winter indoor sightings and starts the cycle over. For seasonal cabins, fall closing is exactly the wrong time to leave a leak unaddressed, because it will keep wood damp all winter for a colony to find.
Why DIY sprays fail
By now the reason store-bought sprays disappoint should be coming into focus, but it is worth stating plainly because it is where so much wasted effort goes.
A can of ant spray kills the ants it touches. On a carpenter ant infestation, the ants it touches are foragers from a satellite nest — a visible slice of a colony whose queen, brood, and reserves are hidden inside a wall void or out in a stump you have never looked at. You spray the trail, the ants vanish, and it feels solved. Then the nest, entirely unharmed, sends out more foragers, and within days the trail is back. People repeat this all summer and conclude they simply have ants, when what they have is an untreated colony they keep dusting the surface of.
Repellent sprays add the budding risk described earlier: irritated colonies can split into multiple nests, multiplying the problem. And none of it touches the reason the ants are there in the first place — the damp wood. Even a homeowner who manages to knock a colony back has done nothing about the leak that will invite the next one.
Effective carpenter ant control requires three things a spray can rarely deliver: finding the nests, including satellites hidden in the structure and, where possible, the parent nest outdoors; treating the colony at its source so the material reaches the queen and brood, typically through targeted application and baiting rather than surface knockdown; and correcting the moisture so the wood dries out and stops being habitat. That is inspection-heavy, building-specific work, and it is the difference between a lull and a fix.

Take away the food, the water, and the entry, and nuisance ants lose their reason to be there.
For carpenter ants, prevention is above all about moisture and wood. Fix roof and plumbing leaks as soon as you find them rather than letting a slow drip soften the framing for a season. Keep gutters clear and downspouts directing water well away from the foundation. Ventilate crawlspaces and damp closed rooms so framing can dry. Eliminate wood-to-soil contact at posts, siding, and steps. Keep firewood off the ground and away from the house, because a woodpile against the wall is both a parent-nest site and a bridge indoors. Trim back tree branches that touch the roof or siding, since they give ants a direct route in and keep surfaces shaded and damp. And keep an eye on decks and porches, the most exposed wood you own. The through-line is simple: carpenter ants want soft, wet wood, so a dry, well-drained, well-ventilated house is the best long-term defense there is.
