Two very different ant problems under one name

When someone calls about ants, the first thing we need to sort out is which problem they actually have, because “ants” covers two situations that could hardly be more different. One is a nuisance. The other can quietly take money out of the value of your house.

The first and far more common problem is nuisance ants — pavement ants, odorous house ants, and their relatives — trailing indoors after food and moisture. These are the little ants you find marching along a counter edge, ringing the base of the dishwasher, or filing in and out of a crack by the patio door. They are annoying, they get into the sugar and the pet food, and in large numbers they are genuinely unpleasant, but they are not eating your house. The second problem is carpenter ants, and they are a different animal entirely. Carpenter ants are big — the workers can run up to roughly half an inch, and a single colony produces workers of varying sizes, so you will often see large and small individuals together. Nuisance ants like pavement ants and odorous house ants are small and fairly uniform, on the order of an eighth of an inch. If the ant looks substantial enough that you notice it as an individual crossing the floor rather than as part of a faint line, you are probably looking at a carpenter ant.

Color helps too. Carpenter ants in our region are typically black or very dark, sometimes with a reddish or brownish cast to the midsection. They have a single node at the waist and an evenly rounded profile across the top of the thorax, but for a homeowner the size-and-color combination — large and dark — is the practical tell.

Season and location may be the most useful clue of all, and it is one anybody can read. Nuisance ants are warm-weather foragers; you see them from spring through fall when they are active outdoors and trailing in. Carpenter ants foraging from an outdoor nest follow a similar warm-season pattern. But if you are seeing large dark ants inside during the cold months — walking across a bathroom floor in December, showing up on a kitchen counter in February — that is not a forager wandering in from the yard, because ants outdoors are dormant in a Wisconsin winter. The queen, the brood, and most of the workers are back in the nest, out of sight. Carpenter ants earn a section of their own because almost everything about them is misunderstood, and the misunderstandings lead directly to failed treatments.

Start with the biggest one: carpenter ants do not eat wood. Termites eat wood — they digest the cellulose. Carpenter ants excavate it. They chew through wood to carve out smooth, clean galleries and tunnels for the colony to live in, and they carry the debris out and dump it rather than consuming it. Their actual food is elsewhere: outdoors they tend aphids and feed on the sweet honeydew the aphids produce, they scavenge dead insects, and indoors they will happily take the sweets, grease, and proteins in your kitchen. So a carpenter ant is not living off your studs — it is living in them, and eating from your pantry and your yard.

That distinction is not academic; it is diagnostic. Finally, carpenter ants organize themselves across multiple nests. The colony is founded by a single queen in a parent nest, and that parent nest — with the queen and the young brood — is very often outdoors, in a tree, a stump, a root, a woodpile, or buried landscape timber. As the colony matures, it establishes satellite nests: outposts of workers and older larvae that can be located some distance from the parent, including inside your home. The ants you see indoors typically belong to a satellite nest. This is why treating carpenter ants is more than treating one spot: kill an indoor satellite and leave a thriving parent nest out in the yard, and the colony rebuilds. A real solution has to account for the whole network.

Moisture is the real driver

Winter is when carpenter ants give themselves away indoors. Why DIY sprays fail

A can of ant spray kills the ants it touches. On a carpenter ant infestation, the ants it touches are foragers from a satellite nest — a visible slice of a colony whose queen, brood, and reserves are hidden inside a wall void or out in a stump you have never looked at.
