The damage that does not look like an animal
Porcupine problems rarely announce themselves as wildlife problems. They start as something inexplicable.
The plywood on the shed has been chewed away along one edge. The handle of a good axe left leaning in the barn is ruined. A section of deck rail looks like it has been attacked with a rasp. Someone finds the brake lines on a truck chewed through, or the seat of a boat torn up, or the leather on a saddle destroyed. None of it makes sense as animal behavior, because none of it is food.
Then you look at what the damaged items have in common, and there it is: salt. Sweat-soaked wood, sodium-containing glues, road salt on a vehicle underside, salt-cured leather. Once you see the pattern the whole thing resolves at once.
That is a porcupine, and in rural Northeast Wisconsin it is a more common visitor than most property owners realize.
What a porcupine is
Erethizon dorsatum, the North American porcupine, is our second-largest rodent after the beaver — a stout, slow, heavily built animal weighing anywhere from about fifteen to thirty-five pounds, covered across the back, sides, and tail with somewhere around thirty thousand quills.
The quills are modified hairs: hollow, stiff, and tipped with microscopic backward-facing barbs. They are loosely rooted, which is the key detail. A porcupine cannot throw them, shoot them, or launch them in any way — that myth needs putting down firmly. What it can do is raise them, turn its back, and lash with a muscular tail. Anything that makes contact comes away with quills embedded, and the transfer is so quick that a dog can take a faceful without anyone seeing what happened.
The face and belly are soft and unquilled, which is how a fisher — a large, agile member of the weasel family and the porcupine’s main natural predator here — kills them.
Porcupines are largely nocturnal, excellent climbers, and utterly unhurried. They do not run, they do not chase, they cannot catch anything, and they have no interest in confrontation. A person keeping a few feet of distance is in no danger whatsoever. This is a placid animal that happens to be well defended.
The salt craving, and why it drives everything
Understanding this one physiological quirk explains nearly all porcupine property damage.
Porcupines need sodium, and their diet — bark, twigs, buds, conifer needles, and summer vegetation — contains almost none of it. In winter, when they are living almost entirely on bark and needles, the deficit becomes acute. So they actively hunt for salt, and they have a remarkable ability to find it.
What ends up on the list:
- Plywood and manufactured wood panels, because many adhesives contain sodium compounds. Shed walls, barn sheathing, and subfloor edges get chewed away.
- Tool handles — axes, shovels, hammers, anything with years of hand sweat soaked into the wood. A good axe handle is a delicacy.
- Deck rails, stair treads, and porch posts that people have gripped repeatedly.
- Vehicle tires, brake lines, hoses, and undercarriage components carrying road salt. This one has genuine safety implications.
- Leather — saddles, tack, boots, boat seats — which is salt-cured and sweat-soaked.
- Livestock salt and mineral blocks, an obvious and powerful draw.
- Outhouse and cabin timbers, and plywood on seasonal properties generally, which is why cabin owners so often return to chewed structures.
The chewing is methodical and heavy — porcupines are rodents with powerful continuously growing incisors — and it leaves broad, coarse tooth grooves quite unlike the fine work of a squirrel or mouse.
Tree damage and girdling
The other half of the porcupine problem is what they do to trees, and it can be serious.
In winter porcupines climb and feed on bark, stripping it in irregular patches from the upper trunk and larger branches, well off the ground. It leaves pale exposed wood and coarse tooth marks, and it is quite distinct from rabbit damage, which is neat and low, or deer damage, which is ragged and torn.
When the stripping goes all the way around the trunk, the tree is girdled — the tissue carrying nutrients between canopy and roots is severed, and everything above that point dies. Partial stripping is survivable but leaves the tree open to disease and insects.
They favor hemlock, pine, and other conifers through the winter, and they show strong site fidelity: the same animal returns to the same trees, sometimes staying up in one for days at a time. One porcupine using a woodlot can kill several trees over a few seasons, which is why owners of managed woodland here take them more seriously than the average homeowner does.
Denning under buildings
Naturally, porcupines den in rock crevices, hollow logs, brush piles, and the base of large trees. Around a rural property, though, the void under a shed, barn, porch, deck, or outbuilding is better than anything nature offers: dry, sheltered, and inaccessible to fishers.
The den is unmistakable once you know what to look for. Porcupines defecate at the entrance rather than away from it, and over a season or several the accumulation becomes substantial — a genuine mound of pellets outside the hole, mixed with shed quills. In winter, well-worn trails through the snow lead to and from the entrance.
They are strongly attached to these sites and return year after year, which has a direct practical consequence: closing the den has to be permanent and robust, or the animal simply reopens it.
When are porcupines active in Northeast Wisconsin?
Winter is peak conflict season, and everything converges. Porcupines do not hibernate. Their diet shifts to bark and needles, so tree girdling happens now. That diet supplies no sodium, so the salt craving intensifies and the structural chewing starts. Deep snow keeps them close to the den, concentrating damage in one area. And road salt is everywhere. If you have a porcupine problem, you will almost certainly discover it between December and March.
Spring brings a shift to fresh green vegetation and generally reduces structural chewing. Young are born in spring, typically a single well-developed baby.
Summer is the quietest period for conflicts — natural food is abundant and salt-seeking eases.
Autumn sees them feeding heavily and beginning to settle toward winter dens. This is the best window for exclusion work, before the animal is established for the cold season.
How do you know you have porcupines?
- Gnawed plywood, shed walls, or barn sheathing with broad coarse tooth grooves
- Ruined tool handles, deck rails, or porch posts
- Chewed tires, brake lines, hoses, or undercarriage components on vehicles left outside
- Damaged leather — saddles, tack, boat seats, boots
- Bark stripped in patches from the upper trunk and branches of conifers, with nipped twigs on the ground below
- A den entrance under a shed, barn, deck, or porch with a mound of pellet scat outside
- Shed quills around a den entrance, on trails, or caught on structures
- Worn trails through snow leading to and from a building
- A dark bulky shape high in a conifer in winter
- A dog with quills — the most urgent sign of all
Are porcupines dangerous?
To people: minimal, provided you do not touch one. Porcupines cannot throw quills, cannot chase you, and will not approach. Keep a few feet of distance and there is no hazard.
To dogs: significant and common. A dog that investigates a porcupine gets quilled, usually in the face and mouth, and it is a veterinary emergency rather than a home first-aid job. The barbs make quills very hard to withdraw cleanly, and they migrate deeper with time and movement, potentially reaching joints, the chest cavity, or an eye. Do not attempt removal yourself; you will likely snap them and leave barbed fragments buried. Sedation is usually required. Dogs also frequently do it more than once, having learned nothing from the experience.
To livestock: cattle and horses occasionally get quilled investigating one, with the same complications.
To property: the structural chewing is real and cumulative, and the chewed brake lines and vehicle components are a genuine safety issue rather than an inconvenience.
To trees: girdling kills, and a single animal can take out several trees over a few seasons in a woodlot.
Porcupines can carry parasites and disease as any wild mammal can, but that is not a leading concern here — the quills and the chewing are.
Why doesn’t DIY work on porcupines?
Trying to move the animal. Porcupines are slow and appear easy to handle, which leads people to attempt it. Anything that contacts the animal gets quilled, including gloves, tools, and the person holding them.
Closing the den with light material. Lattice, thin plywood, or chicken wire will not hold. Porcupines are heavy-jawed rodents and strong diggers, and they are motivated to get back into an established den. Expect a new hole beside your patch within days.
Ignoring the salt sources. Remove the animal and leave the plywood, the tool handles, and the road-salted truck, and the property is just as attractive to the next porcupine that comes through.
Fencing that ignores climbing. A fence that stops a groundhog does not stop a porcupine, which climbs well. Effective fencing needs both a dig barrier and something at the top.
Waiting on tree damage. Girdling is not reversible. Once the trunk is stripped all the way round, that tree is finished, so protecting valuable trees is preventive work rather than responsive.
Assuming it left. Porcupines have strong site fidelity and will return to a den they have used for years.
How does BugBoss handle porcupines?

5. Remove the attractants. This is the part that determines whether you get a repeat with a different animal. Securing salt and mineral blocks, storing tools and leather inside, protecting exposed plywood edges, and parking vehicles where they are not accessible.
6. Protect the trees that matter. Metal bands or hardware cloth wraps on valuable trunks, focused on the trees they have already shown interest in.
7. Check the rest of the property. Where there is one suitable void there are usually others — the barn, the old shed, the deck at the back. Closing one den and leaving three open moves the problem rather than solving it.
How do you keep porcupines out?
- Secure the salt. Livestock salt and mineral blocks in porcupine-proof housing, tools and leather stored inside, boats and saddles under cover.
- Store tools indoors. Sweat-soaked handles are a genuine draw and easily protected.
- Protect exposed plywood on sheds and outbuildings, particularly at the edges where chewing starts.
- Park vehicles under cover in winter where possible, especially after road salt exposure.
- Close voids under buildings before anything moves in — hardware cloth, skirted or buried. This is cheap preventively and expensive retroactively.
- Wrap valuable trees with metal bands or hardware cloth on the trunk.
- Clear brush piles and hollow logs near buildings if you have persistent pressure.
- Keep dogs leashed at dusk and at night on rural properties in winter, which is when most quillings happen.
