Why ticks are a health issue, not just a nuisance
Most pests on a rural Wisconsin property are an annoyance or a threat to the building. Identification: deer ticks versus wood ticks
Two ticks dominate here, and telling them apart matters, because only one carries Lyme.
The American dog tick, universally called the wood tick around here, is the big, obvious one. Adults are sizable, roughly the size of a small watermelon seed before feeding, brown with distinctive off-white or silvery mottling on the back. This is the tick most people find crawling on a pant leg or the dog after a spring walk through tall grass. It is the classic Wisconsin wood tick, and, importantly, it does not transmit Lyme disease. It can rarely be involved in other illnesses, but for the everyday homeowner the wood tick is mostly a nuisance and a startle.
The blacklegged tick, the deer tick, is the one that matters for Lyme, and it is much smaller and plainer. Adults are reddish-brown to black, roughly sesame-seed sized, with no pale markings, and the legs are dark. But the stage that causes most human Lyme cases is the nymph, which is about the size of a poppy seed, small enough that most people never notice one attached. That combination, tiny and unmarked, is exactly what makes the deer tick dangerous: you do not see it, so it stays on long enough to transmit. If you find a small, dark, unmarked tick, especially a barely visible one, treat it as a deer tick and take it seriously.
The deer tick lifecycle and Wisconsin biology
Understanding the deer tick’s two-year life cycle explains both when the risk peaks and why the nymph is the dangerous stage.
A female deer tick lays her eggs, and larvae hatch in summer. These six-legged larvae take a single blood meal, typically from a small mammal or bird, very often a white-footed mouse, which is the key reservoir of the Lyme bacterium in Wisconsin. Larvae usually start out uninfected but pick up the pathogen during that first meal if the host is carrying it. After feeding, the larva drops off and overwinters.
The following spring and summer, the tick molts to the nymph stage and becomes active, with peak nymph activity from roughly May through July. This is the highest-risk period for people, for two reasons that compound: the nymph is poppy-seed small and easily missed, and by now a large share of nymphs are infected from that first larval meal. A feeding nymph that goes unnoticed on a person for a day or more is the classic Lyme transmission scenario. Nymphs feed on small mammals, birds, and, incidentally, people, then drop off and molt.
In fall, the tick reaches the adult stage and seeks a larger host, above all the white-tailed deer, which is where it mates and which sustains the tick population across the landscape. Adult deer ticks are active in fall and again in spring and will quest on any day above freezing, which is why you can pick one up on a mild late-November or early-April afternoon. Adults are larger and easier to find, so they cause proportionally less disease than the tiny nymphs. The female feeds, drops off, and lays eggs the next season, completing the roughly two-year cycle.
Two things fall out of this biology. First, the deer-and-mouse dependence means that anywhere with deer moving through and rodents in the leaf litter, essentially every wooded rural property here, will have ticks reintroduced continually, which is why eradication is impossible and management is the goal. Second, deer ticks are humidity-dependent and cannot survive long in hot, dry, open turf, which is why they are so tightly concentrated in the shaded, moist edge habitats and why a treatment aimed at those edges is so effective.
The tick season in Central and Northeast Wisconsin
Tick season here effectively runs the entire snow-free year, but it has a clear shape.
Early spring, as the snow melts and the ground warms, is when adult deer ticks that overwintered come back out to quest, and they will feed on any warm day. This is an underrated risk window, because people are eager to get outdoors and are not yet in tick-checking habits. Wood ticks also begin appearing.
Late spring and early summer, roughly May into July, is the dangerous heart of the season. Through the rest of summer, nymph activity tapers but does not vanish, and larvae hatch and begin feeding, setting up the next generation. Late summer around the lakes and rivers is peak cabin and outdoor-recreation season, so exposure stays high on recreational properties even as the raw tick numbers ease off their peak.
Fall brings the second deer-tick peak as the adults become active and seek deer and other large hosts. Adult ticks remain a bite risk right up until consistent hard freezes, and hunters, hikers, and anyone working in the woods in October and November are exposed. Only sustained cold and snow cover finally shut the season down, and even then a January thaw can rouse questing adults.
Where ticks come from and concentrate locally
Ticks are a landscape pest, tied to the deer, rodents, and vegetation of the surrounding countryside, and on any given property they concentrate in the same predictable places.
The woodland edge is the single most important zone: the transition where a mowed lawn gives way to woods, brush, or tall grass. Deer travel these edges, dropping ticks; the shade and leaf litter hold the humidity ticks need; and the questing ticks wait on the tips of grass and low vegetation for a host to brush past. A property that borders woods, brush, or tall grass, or that has deer moving through and rodents in the leaf litter, should be assumed to have ticks in its edge habitats whether or not you have found them yet.
For the diseases, the signs are in the person, not the yard. Lyme disease often, though not always, produces an expanding rash at the bite site, sometimes the classic bull’s-eye, days to a few weeks after the bite, along with flu-like symptoms, fatigue, fever, aches, and joint pain.
