What are voles, and how do you identify them?
Voles are the small, plant-eating rodents that most people around here never see but discover every spring, when the snow pulls back and the lawn is laced with winding trails and the young trees turn out to have their bark chewed off. Locally they get called meadow mice, and that name is a good guide to what they are: stocky, short-tailed, small-eared rodents that live outdoors in grass, mulch, and ground cover, feeding on plants. The species doing most of the damage in Northeast Wisconsin is the meadow vole, an animal of fields, lawns, orchards, and grassy edges across the whole region.
A vole is easy to distinguish from the mice that get into buildings once you have one in hand or get a look at one. It is chunkier and more compact than a house mouse, with a blunt, rounded nose, small eyes, ears mostly hidden in the fur, and — the key mark — a short tail, much shorter than the long tail of a house or deer mouse. The color is a dull brown to gray-brown. But most vole identification is done not by seeing the animal but by reading its sign, because voles are secretive and stay under cover.
The two signs that define a vole problem are surface runways and girdled plants. Runways are narrow, worn paths — an inch or two wide — winding through the grass and ground cover, where voles have traveled the same routes over and over, clipping the vegetation down. Girdling is bark gnawed off the base of trees and shrubs, often in irregular patches or a complete ring around the trunk, with small gnaw marks visible in the wood. Both become obvious at snowmelt. It is worth being clear about what voles are not: they are not moles. Moles are insect-eating mammals that push up soil ridges and mounds tunneling for grubs; if you see raised soil rather than surface trails and chewed bark, that is a mole, and it is a different animal with a different fix.
How do voles live and breed in Wisconsin?
Voles are built to be abundant. They are among the most prolific small mammals on the landscape: a female meadow vole can produce numerous litters over the course of a year, with several young per litter, and the young mature in a matter of weeks and begin breeding themselves. Under good conditions — abundant cover and food, mild weather — a population can build with startling speed, which is why voles have well-known boom-and-crash cycles, running to high densities in some years and low in others. A yard or orchard that carried a handful of voles one year can be riddled with them the next.
Voles are active year-round — they do not hibernate — and this is the single most important fact about the damage they do here. Through the growing season they live in shallow burrows and travel their surface runways under the protection of grass and ground cover, feeding on grasses, seeds, roots, bulbs, and green plants. When winter arrives and snow falls, they do not slow down; instead they move into the subnivean space — the insulated gap between the snowpack and the ground — where they remain active and protected all winter. Hidden from hawks, owls, foxes, and coyotes by the snow, they range freely, and with green vegetation gone they turn to the next best food: the bark of young trees and shrubs. This is when the girdling happens, out of sight under the snow, and why the damage is a surprise revealed at spring melt.
Voles are prey animals and their numbers are held in check partly by predators — which is exactly why cover matters so much. Dense grass, heavy mulch, and brush let voles travel and feed while staying hidden, so a landscape rich in cover both supports more voles and lets the ones it has do more damage. Reduce the cover and you both lower the carrying capacity and expose the voles to the predators that keep them down.
It is worth understanding what girdling actually does to a tree, because it explains why the damage is so often fatal and so often delayed. Bark is not just a wrapper; the living tissue just under it — the phloem and cambium — carries sugars from the leaves down to the roots and grows the trunk’s diameter. When voles chew a complete ring around the base, they sever that pathway all the way around, and the roots are cut off from the food the canopy produces. A tree girdled in a full ring under the snow may leaf out weakly in spring on stored energy and then decline and die through the summer, which is why an owner often does not connect the loss to voles at all — the chewing happened months earlier, out of sight. Partial girdling, where a strip of bark survives, may let a tree limp along or recover, but it leaves a wound open to disease and weakens the tree for years. This delayed, hidden nature of the damage is exactly why prevention has to happen in fall, before the feeding, rather than as a reaction in spring after the trees are already girdled.
The vole season in Northeast Wisconsin
Voles are present all year, but the pressure and the visible damage follow the seasons closely.

This is the time to protect vulnerable plantings — wrap young trees, pull mulch back from trunks, mow down cover — before the snow arrives and the girdling begins. Getting the protection in place in fall is far more effective than reacting to the damage in spring.
Through winter, voles are active under the snow, traveling their runways in the subnivean space and girdling the bark of trees and shrubs while nobody can see it happening. A deep, persistent snowpack means a long, protected feeding season and worse damage; the trees that were not protected in fall are being fed on now. The cycle then repeats at the next snowmelt.
Where voles come from: the setting around Clintonville
Voles are everywhere on the rural and semi-rural landscape here — the question on any given property is how much habitat it offers them. How do you know you have voles?
Vole sign is distinctive once you know it. Surface runways are the classic sign — narrow, worn, winding paths an inch or two wide through the grass and ground cover, most visible at snowmelt when the whole network is exposed across the lawn at once. Girdled bark on the base of young trees and shrubs — chewed off in patches or a full ring, with small gnaw marks in the exposed wood, usually at or below the winter snow line — is the damage that matters most. Small burrow openings, roughly an inch or two across with no soil mound (unlike a mole), turn up in mulch, ground cover, and along the runways.
You may find clipped vegetation along the runways where voles have fed, damage to bulbs, roots, and garden plants, and gnawing on the lower stems of ornamentals. Because voles stay under cover and are active largely out of sight, you will usually read these signs rather than see the animals — though you may glimpse one darting along a runway or into a burrow near mulch and ground cover. The absence of raised soil ridges and mounds is itself a useful sign: it tells you this is voles, not moles.
Damage and risk
Voles are primarily a plant-damage problem, and the risk is to your landscaping and orchard rather than to your health or your house. To turf, the damage is largely cosmetic — the runways laid bare at snowmelt look alarming, but the grass usually recovers and fills back in as it greens up, sometimes with a little raking and reseeding of the worst spots. To plants, the damage can be serious and permanent. Girdled young trees and shrubs — especially fruit trees and new ornamentals — can die outright if the bark was chewed in a complete ring, cutting the tree’s circulation; the loss often does not show until the tree fails to leaf out or dies back the next season. Voles also feed on bulbs, roots, and garden plants, and in a bad year they can do real damage to a garden and a new landscape.
On the health side, voles are a low concern compared with house mice and deer mice. Because they stay outdoors, away from living space and food storage, they do not pose the indoor contamination and hantavirus concerns that the building-invading mice do. They can carry some pathogens and parasites, as rodents do, but the reason to control voles is to protect your trees, garden, and lawn — not to keep contamination out of the house. That difference in risk is also a difference in approach: vole work is landscape management, not indoor exclusion.
There is one more cost worth naming, and it is a financial one. Around here a lot of the trees at risk are not cheap or easily replaced: young apple and other fruit trees in a home orchard, ornamental and shade trees a homeowner paid to plant, and the windbreak and yard trees on a rural property. A vole-girdled tree that dies represents years of growth and real money lost, and unlike a chewed shrub it cannot simply be trimmed back and recovered. When you weigh the modest cost of wrapping trunks and reducing cover in fall against the loss of established or newly invested plantings, the prevention is almost always the better economics — which is the whole argument for treating voles proactively rather than absorbing the losses each spring.
Why doesn’t DIY work on voles?
Homeowners typically react to voles in spring, after the damage is done, and they react to the wrong thing. The most common mistake is treating voles like moles — buying mole traps or grub treatments — when the surface runways and chewed bark point to voles, an animal that grub control does nothing about. Getting the ID wrong means the effort misses entirely.
The second mistake is treating the symptom, not the habitat. Scattering a little bait or trapping a few voles in spring does not address the dense cover, the mulch piled against the trunks, and the tall grass that support the population and hide it from predators — so the voles persist and the damage returns the next winter. Voles are prolific and cycle upward fast; as long as the habitat is there, knocking a few back accomplishes little.
The third and most costly mistake is timing. The girdling that kills trees happens under the snow, over the winter, out of sight — so by the time a homeowner sees the damage in spring, the trees are already girdled and the vole feeding season is over. Protecting the trees in fall, before the snow, is what prevents the damage, but most people do not think about voles until it is too late to help this year’s trees. How do you keep voles out?
Vole prevention is about cover and protection, since there is no building to seal. The single most effective thing is to reduce the cover voles rely on: keep grass mowed, especially around trees, along fencerows, and at field and ditch edges; pull mulch back several inches from tree trunks and shrub bases (mulch against a trunk is a covered feeding highway); and clear brush, debris, and heavy ground cover that give voles protected travel routes. A property with less dense cover carries fewer voles and exposes the ones it has to the hawks, owls, and foxes that keep them in check.
Protect the vulnerable plants before winter. Wrap the base of young trees and valuable shrubs with hardware cloth or plastic tree guards, set a few inches into the soil so voles cannot burrow under and tall enough to clear the expected snow depth so they cannot reach over it. Keep a clear, bare zone around trunks — no grass, no mulch, no cover right at the base. For gardens and bulb beds, hardware-cloth barriers and reducing surrounding cover help protect roots and bulbs. Do this in fall, before the snow arrives and the girdling season begins, because the protection has to be in place before the damage starts, not after it shows up in spring.
Manage the edges and the property as a whole, too. A tidy, mowed transition between lawn and adjacent field, ditch, or woodlot reduces the vole reservoir feeding into the yard, and keeping the immediate landscape open and low takes away the cover that turns a few voles into a damaging population. On a rural property surrounded by grassland the voles will always be out there — the realistic goal is a low-cover landscape with the valuable plants protected, not a vole-free countryside.
