What a house centipede is
The creature that darts out from under the water heater and streaks across the basement floor faster than you can react is almost always a house centipede — Scutigera coleoptrata. It is one of the most alarming-looking things people find in a Northeast Wisconsin home, and one of the least harmful. Learning what it actually is takes most of the fear out of it, and — more usefully — tells you exactly what’s wrong with the space you found it in.
A house centipede is a predatory arthropod, not an insect in the strict sense. Its body runs about an inch to an inch and a half long, colored a grayish-yellow with three darker stripes down the back, and it carries up to fifteen pairs of very long legs — one pair per body segment. Those legs are the whole story. They make the animal look far bigger than it is, they make it move in a fast, unsettling blur, and they’re the tool it uses to run down and catch other insects. The rearmost legs are so long that people often can’t tell the head from the tail.
Here’s the reframe that matters: a house centipede is a hunter, and it is in your basement because your basement is feeding it. It eats other arthropods — insects, spiders, silverfish, springtails, small cockroaches, and the like. It needs dampness to survive. So finding one is really finding two facts about your home at once: the space is humid enough to keep a moisture-dependent animal alive, and it has enough prey to be worth hunting in. In that sense the centipede is less a pest in its own right than a living moisture-and-pest gauge. That’s the lens we use on every centipede call, and it’s why the fix is almost never “kill the centipede.”
How do you identify centipedes?
House centipedes are easy to tell apart from almost anything else once you know the marks. The body is flattened and segmented, grayish-yellow with three dark longitudinal lines, and the legs are long and banded, sticking out from the sides so the whole animal looks like a fringed ribbon when it runs. On the biggest, most mature specimens the leg span can look startlingly wide relative to the slim body. They move in quick bursts and freeze, then burst again — a very different motion from the steady crawl of a beetle or the scuttle of a spider.
Don’t confuse them with a few look-alikes. Millipedes are slow, dark, rounded (not flattened), have two pairs of short legs per segment, and curl into a tight coil when disturbed; they invade in mass numbers, especially in fall and after heavy rain, and they eat decaying plant matter, not other bugs. Ground beetles and other basement wanderers have obvious hard wing covers and six legs. The long-legged, fast, striped, many-legged animal that vanishes into a crack the instant the light comes on is the house centipede, essentially every time.
One more identification note that reassures people: the house centipede is the only centipede species that actually breeds indoors in our region, and it stays in small numbers. You are not going to open a wall and find a nest of hundreds. They breed slowly and live more than a year as individuals, so what you’re seeing is usually a handful of long-lived animals, not a booming colony — which is very different from, say, a mouse or ant problem where numbers climb fast.
How do centipedes live and breed in Wisconsin?
The house centipede evolved in warm, dry Mediterranean regions and spread worldwide by moving into human structures, and that history explains its behavior in Wisconsin. Outdoors in a climate like ours it lives under mulch, logs, leaf litter, landscape timbers, stones, and in the damp margins of foundations — the same cool, dark, humid microhabitats it seeks indoors. When the outdoor world gets too cold, or in the case of a heated home simply because the basement offers year-round stable conditions, it moves in and can complete its whole life cycle inside.
Reproduction is slow and low-volume by pest standards. The female lays eggs in damp, protected spots, and the young hatch with fewer legs than the adults, adding pairs of legs and body segments with each molt until they reach the full fifteen pairs. A house centipede can live more than a year, and often several — a long life for something this small — which is part of why you’ll see the same small number of them over a long stretch rather than a sudden bloom. Because they breed slowly and stay few in number, a centipede problem is really a habitat problem: the space keeps a small resident population alive year after year rather than exploding.
The hunting biology is what ties them to the rest of your pest picture. A house centipede subdues prey by seizing it with its modified front legs — called forcipules — which inject venom. That venom is calibrated for silverfish and springtails, not for people; it’s why the animal is a fearsome predator to a bug and a near-nothing to a human. It hunts at night, running down prey with those long legs, and it will stay wherever the hunting is good. So the population size of your centipedes is set, more than anything, by the population size of everything else living in the damp with them.
When are centipedes active in Northeast Wisconsin?
Because house centipedes can live entirely indoors, they’re a year-round presence in a home that suits them — you can find one in January as easily as July. But there’s still a seasonal rhythm to when people notice them in Northeast Wisconsin, and it maps onto the region’s moisture cycle.
Spring brings snowmelt and saturated ground, and in our block-and-fieldstone-foundation homes that means damp basements and wet crawlspaces. Centipedes that overwintered outdoors, or that were already inside, become more active and more visible as the lower level of the house takes on humidity. Summer is peak humidity season here — warm, muggy stretches drive basement relative humidity up, and that’s when both the centipedes and the insects they eat do best. Homeowners without a dehumidifier tend to notice the most sightings in July and August. Fall produces a wave of ground-level pests moving toward warm structures, and centipedes often follow their prey — plus the general fall push indoors that this whole region experiences as the weather turns. Winter thins outdoor populations to nothing, but a heated home with a damp basement keeps its resident centipedes going straight through, which is why a January sighting is such a clear sign that the basement conditions, not the season, are what’s holding them.
Seasonal cabins around the Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes deserve their own note here. A cabin that gets closed up and left cold and unheated over winter, then opened in spring, is a special case: through the closed months the building takes on ground and lake moisture with no heat or ventilation to drive it off, so owners frequently open the door in May to a basement or crawlspace that’s been quietly humid for six months and stocked with the insects centipedes eat. The first warm visits of the season are when those cabin populations become visible, and it’s a big part of why we recommend a spring inspection at opening for lake properties.
The through-line is moisture. Centipedes track humidity, and in this region humidity in the lower level of a house peaks with spring melt and summer mugginess, so that’s when the sightings peak — but a chronically damp basement erases the seasonality and gives you a year-round problem.
What conditions bring centipedes to a property here?
This is where the Clintonville area’s housing stock does most of the work. Northeast and Central Wisconsin homes skew old — pre-war farmhouses, mid-century village homes, seasonal lake cabins — and the way they’re built is a near-perfect match for what a house centipede wants.
Block and fieldstone foundations are the big one. Concrete block wicks moisture and has hollow cores; fieldstone-and-mortar walls are riddled with gaps. Both keep a basement humid and both offer endless dark cracks for a centipede to shelter in during the day. Crawlspaces with bare dirt floors, common under older additions and cabins, are essentially outdoor centipede habitat brought inside — cool, dark, and constantly humid from ground moisture evaporating up. Poor exterior drainage — grading that slopes toward the house, missing or clogged gutters, downspouts dumping at the foundation — pushes water against the basement wall and keeps it damp from the outside in. Add our high water table in low-lying and riverside areas (much of the land near the Pigeon, Wolf, Embarrass, and Little Wolf drainages), and a lot of local basements are fighting groundwater year-round.
Inside, the drivers are the usual damp spots: sweating cold-water pipes, leaking water heaters and washing-machine connections, condensation on ductwork, dryer venting into a crawlspace instead of outdoors, and floor drains with dried-out traps. Each of these creates a pocket of humidity and, often, a little standing moisture that supports the springtails and other tiny prey the centipedes hunt.
And that prey supply is the second driver, inseparable from the first. Damp basements grow silverfish, springtails, small spiders, ground beetles, ants, and the occasional roach — the exact menu a house centipede lives on. So the same conditions that keep the centipede comfortable also stock its pantry. This is why we always inspect a centipede problem as a moisture problem with a food problem riding on top of it, and why the two get solved together.
How do you know you have centipedes?
Centipedes don’t leave much evidence — no droppings you’d notice, no damage, no nests. The signs are mostly sightings and conditions:
- The animal itself, usually darting for cover when a light comes on at night, in a basement, bathroom, crawlspace, or ground-floor room. This is by far the most common sign.
- Repeated sightings in the same damp areas — around the water heater, floor drain, washing machine, sump, or in a crawlspace — pointing to a resident population rather than a one-off wanderer.
- A visibly or measurably humid lower level. A hygrometer reading above 50 percent, condensation on pipes or windows, a musty smell, or damp block walls all indicate the conditions that support them.
- Other damp-loving insects present. Finding silverfish, springtails, or small spiders in the same spaces tells you the prey base is there, which is why the centipedes are too.
If you’re finding centipedes regularly, don’t focus on the animals — read the room. What they’re really reporting is a moisture problem and a standing insect population in the lower level of your home.
Are centipedes dangerous?
Let’s be plain about the actual danger, because the appearance oversells it. House centipedes are, for practical purposes, harmless to people. They have venom, but it’s meant for the insects they hunt; they’re shy and non-aggressive, they rarely bite, and on the rare occasion one bites a person who’s handling it, the effect is comparable to a mild bee sting and passes quickly. They don’t transmit disease, they don’t contaminate food, they don’t chew wiring or wood, and they don’t damage stored goods. In strictly rational terms, they’re one of the most benign things you can find indoors — and arguably beneficial, since they kill other pests.
The real cost is the nuisance and the alarm. Almost nobody wants to share their bathroom with a fast, many-legged predator, and the startle of one running across your foot in the dark is genuinely unpleasant. For a lot of homeowners that’s reason enough to want them gone, and that’s a fair reason. We just approach it honestly: this is a comfort and peace-of-mind problem far more than a safety problem, and the way to solve it for good is to change the conditions, not to wage a losing war on individual animals with a spray can.
There’s a more important secondary risk worth flagging, though. Because centipedes indicate dampness, a persistent centipede problem is often the first noticeable symptom of a moisture issue that will cause bigger problems — mold, wood rot, and the whole cast of other moisture pests, from silverfish to carpenter ants. In that sense the centipede is doing you a favor by showing up: it’s an early warning that the lower level of the house needs attention.
Why doesn’t DIY work on centipedes?
People fight centipedes the way they fight most bugs — with a can of spray — and it doesn’t work, for reasons built into the animal’s biology.
The spray kills the individual you see. It does not lower the humidity that makes the space livable, and it does not remove the prey insects the centipedes are feeding on. Both of those conditions are still there the next day, so more centipedes move in from the foundation cracks, the crawlspace, and outdoors to take advantage of the same good hunting. You’ve addressed a symptom and left the cause completely intact.
Perimeter and crack-and-crevice sprays do a little more, since they hit the entry points and harborage, but they break down, wash off in damp conditions (exactly where centipedes live), and still never touch the moisture. A homeowner can spend a whole summer spraying baseboards and still see a centipede every week, because the basement is still 65 percent humidity and still full of springtails.
The other DIY failure is misdiagnosis. Because centipedes are so alarming, people pour effort into the centipede itself and never ask what it’s eating or why the space is damp. They treat the visible predator and ignore the invisible prey population and moisture source that are the actual engine of the problem. The result is a lot of dead centipedes and no change in how many they see. Lasting control runs the other direction: dry the space, remove the food, seal the entries, and the centipedes leave because there’s no longer any reason for them to be there.

Treat harborage and entry points. We apply targeted materials to the cracks, foundation gaps, sill plates, and ground-level entry routes where centipedes shelter and get in — not a blanket fog, but placed treatment where it does the work, paired with the prey control above.
Address moisture and exclude. This is the durable part. We lay out the drying and sealing that change the habitat: dehumidification, drainage and grading corrections, crawlspace treatment, sealing foundation and pipe penetrations, and keeping floor-drain traps charged. This is core residential pest control for us, and on older properties it dovetails with the same exclusion work we do for mice and other ground-level invaders.
Follow up. We confirm the numbers are dropping and the conditions are holding, and adjust if a moisture source turns out to be more stubborn than it first looked. Centipede control is habitat change, and we’d rather set the right expectation — that drying a chronically damp basement takes some doing — than promise a one-spray cure that won’t last.
How do you keep centipedes out?
Preventing centipedes is preventing the two things they need: moisture and prey, plus closing the doors they come in through. In practice:
Dry the lower level. Run a properly sized dehumidifier and aim to hold basement and crawlspace relative humidity below about 50 percent — the single most effective move against centipedes and most of their prey. Fix the water sources: repair plumbing and water-heater leaks, insulate sweating cold-water pipes, make sure the dryer vents outdoors, and cover bare crawlspace dirt with a vapor barrier.
Fix drainage outside. Clean and extend gutters and downspouts so roof water discharges well away from the foundation, and correct grading that slopes toward the house. Keeping water off the basement wall from the outside is half the humidity battle.
Cut off the harborage and food. Reduce clutter, cardboard, and stored items that sit on damp basement floors, since those are both centipede hiding spots and silverfish habitat. Controlling the prey insects — silverfish, springtails, spiders — removes the reason centipedes stay.
Seal the entries. Caulk and seal foundation cracks, gaps around basement windows, sill-plate gaps, and pipe and utility penetrations. Keep floor-drain traps filled with water. Outdoors, pull mulch, leaf litter, landscape timbers, and firewood back from the foundation, since those are prime outdoor centipede habitat right against the wall.
Do those things and the space stops being centipede habitat. You’re not killing your way to zero — you’re making the basement a place a moisture-dependent predator can’t make a living, which is what actually holds.
