The name captures it well: the body is covered in fine silvery-gray scales, it tapers from a broad front to a narrow rear like a fish or a carrot, and it moves with a quick, side-to-side, fish-like wriggle. It’s one of the oldest kinds of insects on earth, essentially unchanged for hundreds of millions of years, and it has thrived alongside humans because our buildings supply the two things it needs: humidity and starch.

Those two requirements are the whole key to silverfish. They are wingless, they never developed the ability to conserve water well, and they can’t survive or reproduce without high humidity — so they live in the dampest parts of a house. And they feed on carbohydrates, specifically the starch and cellulose in paper, cardboard, book bindings, wallpaper paste, and stored dry goods. Put those together and you have a pest perfectly adapted to a damp Northeast Wisconsin basement full of stored cardboard boxes, old books, and paper — which is exactly where we find them most.

They have no wings and can’t fly or jump; they get around by running and wriggling, quickly, and they head for cover the instant they’re exposed to light. Immature silverfish look like smaller, sometimes paler versions of the adults and gain their full silvery scaling as they mature.

The main look-alike is the firebrat, a close relative that’s mottled brown-and-gray rather than silvery and prefers hot spots — near furnaces, water heaters, and hot pipes — rather than the cool, damp areas silverfish favor. Control is the same for both, but in Northeast Wisconsin basements the cool-loving silverfish is much more common. Don’t confuse silverfish with young centipedes (which have many legs and are predators) or with small beetles; the three tails and the silvery, scaled, tapered body make silverfish easy to pick out.

How do silverfish live and breed in Wisconsin?

The silverfish life cycle is unusual in ways that directly shape how a problem develops and how you have to fight it. Two traits stand out: they’re slow to develop and long-lived, and they molt throughout their entire lives, even as adults — a rarity among insects.

A female lays eggs in small batches in cracks, crevices, and protected damp spots. The young hatch looking like miniature adults and molt repeatedly as they grow. Development is slow, especially in less-than-ideal conditions — it can take up to two or three years to reach maturity — but silverfish compensate by living a long time, several years or more. And they can survive long periods with little food, so starving them out isn’t practical; the food is everywhere in a home anyway, in the form of paper and starch.

Because silverfish live entirely indoors in the controlled climate of a heated home, they have no seasonal die-off — they’re a year-round, self-sustaining population rather than an invader that comes and goes with the weather. That’s a key difference from most Wisconsin pests. Outdoors they can live under bark, in leaf litter, and in similar damp spots, but the silverfish causing you trouble are living inside, in your basement and walls, breeding on their own schedule regardless of the season outside.

A few more survival traits are worth spelling out, because they explain why silverfish problems are so persistent and so easy to underestimate.
