What crickets are
“Crickets in the house” in Northeast Wisconsin actually means two very different insects with two very different reasons for being there, and telling them apart is the first step to dealing with either one. There’s the field cricket — the familiar black or dark brown, winged cricket whose chirping you know from summer evenings — and there’s the camel cricket, also called the cave cricket or spider cricket, a humpbacked, wingless, silent insect that lurks in damp basements and crawlspaces. They look nothing alike, they behave nothing alike, and the fixes overlap but aren’t identical.
What they share is the reason they end up indoors: the fall push toward warm, damp shelter. As Northeast and Central Wisconsin nights turn cold in late summer and fall, the ground outside cools and dries, and insects that need warmth or moisture start moving toward the one place that still offers both — the ground level of your house. Field crickets migrate toward buildings and slip in through low gaps. Camel crickets, which need cool damp conditions year-round, settle into basements and crawlspaces and can stay indefinitely. Neither is dangerous. Both are a nuisance, and both come in at ground level, which is why exclusion and moisture control are the heart of the fix.
The useful reframe: crickets indoors are a ground-level entry problem, and in the case of camel crickets, a moisture problem on top of it. You don’t beat them by chasing individual crickets around the basement — you beat them by drying the space, cutting the harborage around the foundation, and sealing the gaps they walk in through.
How do you identify crickets?
Field crickets are what most people picture: robust, black to dark brown, about a half inch to a bit over an inch long, with long antennae, large jumping hind legs, and wings folded flat over the back. The males chirp by rubbing their wings together — a behavior only field (and related) crickets do — and the females have a long, needle-like ovipositor projecting from the rear for laying eggs in soil. They’re strong jumpers and can fly short distances. Indoors, you usually hear a field cricket before you see it.
Camel crickets (cave crickets, spider crickets) are unmistakable once you’ve seen one: humpbacked, tan to mottled brown, wingless, and completely silent, with disproportionately long, spindly back legs and very long antennae that give them a spider-like look. They’re about a half inch to an inch and a quarter in body length, but the legs and antennae make them seem larger. Because they’re wingless, they can’t chirp and don’t fly — they get around by jumping, sometimes erratically toward whatever startled them, which is unnerving but harmless. You find camel crickets rather than hear them, typically in clusters in a damp, dark space.
The two are easy to distinguish: if it’s black, winged, and chirping, it’s a field cricket; if it’s humpbacked, tan, wingless, silent, and long-legged, it’s a camel cricket. Don’t confuse camel crickets with spiders (they have six legs and antennae, not eight legs) or with centipedes; the humped back and long jumping legs are the giveaway.
A quick word on the “spider cricket” nickname, since it comes up constantly: it refers to camel crickets, and it’s earned by their long spindly legs and their unsettling habit of jumping toward whatever disturbs them rather than away. That startle-jump is a defense — a small, harmless insect trying to look alarming — and it works on most homeowners, who understandably recoil when a crawlspace erupts with leaping bugs. It’s worth internalizing that the jump is bluff, not threat: camel crickets have no bite, no sting, and no interest in you. Knowing that takes most of the dread out of finding them.
How do crickets live and breed in Wisconsin?
The two crickets have different life cycles, and the differences explain their behavior indoors.
Field crickets in our region generally produce one generation a year. Eggs are laid in the soil in late summer and fall, overwinter, and hatch in spring; the nymphs develop through the summer, and adults appear and chirp from mid-summer into fall. As adults mature and the weather cools, they become highly mobile, and it’s this fall movement — combined with an attraction to warmth and, at night, to lights — that carries them toward and into buildings. Crucially, field crickets don’t establish indoors: the ones that wander in generally die off over the winter without breeding inside. So a field cricket in the house is a temporary intruder, albeit a loud one, rather than the start of an indoor population.
Camel crickets are a different story, and the difference is what makes them the more persistent indoor pest. They’re adapted to cool, dark, humid microhabitats — under logs, in leaf litter, in animal burrows, in caves, and, indoors, in damp basements and crawlspaces. They’re omnivores and detritivores, feeding on fungus, decaying plant and animal matter, and the occasional insect, including — notably — other camel crickets. They lose moisture easily and can’t survive in dry conditions, so their entire lives are organized around staying damp. Because a basement or crawlspace offers exactly the cool, damp, stable, dark conditions they need, camel crickets can live there year-round and breed, building up a resident population that persists as long as the dampness holds. They’re wingless and silent, so that population can grow unnoticed until someone opens a crawlspace and finds dozens.
That contrast — field crickets as temporary loud intruders, camel crickets as persistent silent residents — is the key to understanding cricket problems in this region. It’s also why moisture control matters so much more for camel crickets: take away the dampness and you take away the one thing they can’t live without.
When are crickets active in Northeast Wisconsin?
Cricket pressure in Northeast Wisconsin is a late-summer and fall story, though camel crickets blur the calendar by living indoors year-round.
Through summer, field crickets are maturing and chirping outdoors in fields, lawns, and vegetation — the background sound of a rural Wisconsin evening. Camel crickets are living in their damp outdoor and indoor harborages, largely out of sight. The turn comes in late summer and early fall, when nights cool and the ground begins to dry and chill. This is the migration window. Field crickets, now mature and mobile, move toward the warmth of buildings and press in through ground-level gaps, drawn at night toward lights; this is when the chirping suddenly seems to be coming from inside the house. At the same time, camel crickets that have been outdoors, or that need to escape drying conditions, move into basements, crawlspaces, and garages. This fall push is part of the same broad movement toward warm structures that gives Northeast Wisconsin its whole season of fall invaders.
Into late fall and winter, the field crickets indoors gradually die off — though a warm-weather straggler in a heated wall void can chirp annoyingly for weeks. Camel crickets, by contrast, settle in for the duration; a damp basement or crawlspace keeps them going all winter and they may keep breeding. Spring brings the next generation of field crickets hatching outdoors, restarting the outdoor cycle, while any camel cricket population that overwintered indoors is still there in the damp.
The takeaway on timing: the big influx is a fall event driven by cooling, drying ground, so the most effective window for exclusion and perimeter work is late summer, before the migration — sealing and treating ahead of the push rather than reacting after the crickets are already inside and chirping.
What conditions bring crickets to a property here?
The Clintonville area’s mix of rural land and older housing stock is what sets up cricket problems, and the two crickets respond to two different local features.
Field crickets are driven by the surrounding land. Rural Northeast and Central Wisconsin homes sit amid fields, pastures, lawns, hayfields, and tall grassy margins — prime field-cricket breeding habitat. A big local field-cricket population in late summer means a lot of crickets on the move toward the house come fall. Tall grass and weeds right up against the foundation, wood piles, mulch, and debris give them harborage at the base of the wall, staging them right next to the entry points. Outdoor lighting that shines on the walls at night draws them in too.
Camel crickets are driven by moisture and the building. This is where the region’s older housing stock matters. Crawlspaces with bare dirt floors, common under older farmhouses, additions, and cabins, are constantly humid from ground moisture and are essentially perfect camel-cricket habitat brought indoors. Unheated or damp basements with block and fieldstone foundations hold the cool humidity camel crickets need and offer endless cracks and dark corners. Poor drainage, high water tables near the river drainages, and any chronic dampness in the lower level feed them. Crawlspace vents and access doors, window wells, and low foundation gaps are both their entry points and, once they’re in, the edges of their harborage.
Seasonal lake cabins around the Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes are a classic camel-cricket setting: a cabin with a damp crawlspace or basement, closed up and undisturbed for long stretches, gives camel crickets exactly the cool, humid, quiet conditions they want to build up numbers unnoticed. How do you know you have crickets?
The signs differ by cricket, which is itself diagnostic:
- Chirping at night, especially seeming to come from a wall, basement, or hidden spot — a field cricket indoors. One cricket can sound like it’s everywhere.
- Humpbacked, silent, long-legged crickets found in basements, crawlspaces, garages, and utility rooms — camel crickets. Finding several or many clustered in a damp space is the classic sign.
- Crickets in window wells, garages, and around the foundation in fall, part of the migration toward the house.
- Erratic jumping when disturbed — camel crickets leap toward whatever startles them, so opening a crawlspace and seeing them jump is a common (and startling) first encounter.
- Feeding damage on stored fabrics, paper, and cardboard in heavily infested spaces, and camel cricket droppings in a crawlspace, indicating an established population.
- Damp conditions in the space where camel crickets are found, pointing to the moisture driving them.
If you’re hearing crickets, think field cricket and entry points; if you’re finding silent clusters in a damp lower space, think camel cricket and moisture.
Are crickets dangerous?
Crickets are, health-wise, a low-risk nuisance pest. Neither field nor camel crickets bite people meaningfully, sting, or transmit disease, and neither poses any danger to pets. They don’t damage the structure of the house — no chewing of wood, wiring, or framing. So there’s no safety case for control; the case is comfort and, secondarily, protecting stored belongings.
The nuisance is real, though, and takes two forms. Field crickets bring the maddening, sleep-disrupting chirping — a single cricket in a wall void or basement can keep a household awake for nights, and the sound is hard to locate and stop. Camel crickets bring the unsettling clusters: finding dozens of humpbacked, spidery insects in a crawlspace or basement, and having them jump toward you when disturbed, is genuinely disturbing to most people even though the crickets are harmless.
The one property concern worth taking seriously is feeding damage in large numbers. Both crickets can chew on and damage fabrics, clothing, curtains, paper, and cardboard, and a heavy camel-cricket population in a basement or crawlspace can do noticeable damage to stored goods over time, especially items that are soiled or made of natural fibers. This is usually a slow, cumulative problem tied to a large, established (camel cricket) population rather than a few strays.
And, as with the other damp-loving pests, a camel cricket population is a moisture flag: their presence tells you the lower level of your home is damp enough to sustain moisture-dependent insects, which is a condition that will also invite silverfish and centipedes and can lead to mold and wood rot if it isn’t addressed. In that sense the crickets are doing you the favor of pointing at a problem worth fixing.
Why doesn’t DIY work on crickets?
Homeowners typically respond to crickets with a spray or a few sticky traps, and it disappoints them for the usual reasons.
For field crickets, the spray kills the individuals inside, but the source is a large population out in the surrounding fields and lawns that keeps migrating toward the house every night through the fall, entering through gaps the homeowner hasn’t sealed. You can kill the chirping cricket in the basement and have another in a week, because nothing has changed about the entry points or the outdoor population pressing in. And the migration is seasonal and weather-driven, so it keeps coming as long as the fall push is on.
For camel crickets, the failure is deeper, because they’re an established, breeding population living in damp harborage — the crawlspace, the wall voids, the dark corners of a humid basement — that a homeowner’s spray can’t fully reach. And critically, the spray does nothing about the moisture that’s the whole reason they’re thriving there. A damp crawlspace will keep producing camel crickets no matter how many you kill, because the conditions that support them are untouched.
The common DIY gap is the same across both: it treats the visible crickets and ignores the entry points, the harborage, and (for camel crickets) the dampness that drive the problem. Lasting control runs the other way — seal the ground-level gaps both use, cut the harborage against the foundation, dry out the spaces camel crickets need, and treat where they actually live. That combination is what a can of spray was never going to do.

Time it and follow up. Because the big field-cricket push is a fall event, the most effective work happens in late summer ahead of the migration; for camel crickets it’s about maintaining the dry conditions and re-checking the established harborage. We’d rather set the honest expectation — that camel cricket control is about changing a damp space, which takes some doing — than promise a one-spray fix that won’t last.
How do you keep crickets out?
Preventing crickets combines sealing the entries, drying the camel-cricket spaces, and cutting the outdoor harborage. The practical steps:
Seal the ground-level entries. Install and maintain tight door sweeps on exterior and garage doors, seal gaps around basement windows and repair window-well drainage, caulk foundation cracks and utility penetrations, and screen or seal crawlspace vents and access doors. Both crickets enter low and don’t need much of a gap, so the low perimeter is where sealing pays off.
Dry out basements and crawlspaces. Run a properly sized dehumidifier to hold humidity down, fix plumbing leaks and drainage, lay a vapor barrier over bare crawlspace dirt, and ventilate where appropriate. Removing the dampness is the most effective long-term move against camel crickets, since they can’t live in a dry space.
Cut the outdoor harborage. Keep grass and weeds cut short and pulled back from the foundation, remove mulch, wood piles, leaf litter, and debris against the wall, and store firewood off the ground and away from the house. This reduces where field crickets stage before coming in.
Manage lighting. Where practical, reduce or redirect exterior lighting that shines on the walls at night, or switch to less insect-attractive bulbs, so you’re not drawing migrating field crickets to the house.
Do those things and you close the gaps both crickets walk through, take away the damp habitat camel crickets need, and reduce the outdoor population staging against the foundation — a combination that keeps both kinds out far more reliably than reacting with a spray once they’re inside.
