Bats in the attic is an exclusion job with a legal calendar
If you’ve got bats in your attic, the most important thing to understand before anyone touches anything is that this is not extermination — it’s exclusion, and it runs on a calendar set partly by Wisconsin law. There is no spray, no poison, no fogger for bats. Wisconsin’s bats are a protected group; four of the state’s cave species are listed as threatened, and you can’t legally kill them. What you can do — and what actually works — is let them out and keep them from getting back in. The catch is that when you can do that is restricted, because for a stretch of the summer the attic is full of pups that can’t fly, and sealing the adults out then means starving the young inside.
Get that framing right and the rest follows sensibly. Get it wrong — grab a can of something, or just caulk the hole you can see — and you make it worse, sometimes a lot worse. The maternity season rule — the thing you cannot get wrong
Here’s the rule that governs everything: Wisconsin DNR bars restricting bat exits from June 1 through July 31. That’s the maternity season. Through those weeks, female bats gather in warm roosts — attics are ideal — to give birth and nurse pups that can’t fly for several weeks after birth. Put a one-way door up during that window and the mothers fly out to feed and can’t get back to their young, and the flightless pups die in your attic. It’s inhumane, it’s illegal, and on top of that the trapped adults claw and chew trying to reach the pups and sometimes end up down in the living space.
So exclusion is done outside that window: in spring before June 1, or from August onward once the pups are flying. If you call us in mid-June with bats in the attic, we’ll inspect and get everything ready, but we won’t close the exits until the calendar allows — that’s not us being slow, it’s us keeping you legal and keeping the job from turning into a dead-bat cleanup in your insulation. Which bats, and how they got in
In Wisconsin attics you’re almost always dealing with the big brown bat or the little brown bat. Big browns are the more likely to overwinter right in a building; little browns form the larger maternity colonies and were the species hit hardest by white-nose syndrome, the fungal disease that reached Wisconsin in 2014 and devastated cave-hibernating populations — one more reason these animals are protected and killing them isn’t on the table.
Both species get in through gaps that seem impossibly small. A big brown bat can use an opening around three-eighths of an inch; little browns need even less. The functional entry points are at the roofline and up high: the ridge, the junction where the roof meets the fascia, gable vents, chimney flashing, and soffit returns. Finding every one of them is the skilled core of the job, because a colony returns to the same roost year after year and one missed gap keeps them coming.
Is it bats? Reading the signs
Before assuming, confirm. Bats leave a specific signature. Guano — bat droppings — piles up below the entry point and inside under the roost; unlike solid mouse pellets, it crumbles to a shiny, speckled dust because it’s made of digested insect parts. There’s a soft chittering and scratching at dusk and dawn as the colony leaves to feed and returns. A musky, ammonia smell builds from accumulated guano and urine. Dark, greasy staining rings the entry hole where the bats’ fur rubs the opening. And the clincher: stand outside at dusk on a warm evening and watch — an active colony streams out through the exit in a way you can’t mistake for anything else. Squirrels, by contrast, are noisy in daylight; mice leave scattered solid droppings and stay low.
How the exclusion actually works
The method is straightforward in principle and unforgiving in the details:
First, a thorough inspection, including a dusk watch, to map every functional exit — not just the obvious one. Then we fit those exits with one-way devices — netting or tubes — that let a bat drop out to feed but give it nothing to grip on the return, so the colony empties itself over a few nights of normal foraging. The devices stay up at least a week, longer in cool weather when bats fly less, to guarantee every last bat is out. Only then do we permanently seal all the entry points and any other gaps that could become new ones. Finally, the guano cleanup.
The single most common — and expensive — mistake is doing this out of order: sealing the visible hole before the bats are out. That traps them inside, and now you’ve got dead bats, or live ones in your bedroom, and a bigger bill. Order is everything, and so is patience on the wait.
Guano cleanup isn’t optional
Accumulated guano isn’t just smelly and staining. It can grow Histoplasma, a fungus whose spores cause histoplasmosis, a respiratory illness, when disturbed dust is inhaled — the same keep-it-out-of-the-air hazard as rodent droppings, and a real reason not to go poking around an infested attic yourself. Why the older homes here get colonies
Bats don’t discriminate by tidiness, they discriminate by opportunity, and the housing stock around Clintonville and the surrounding towns offers a lot of it. Pre-war farmhouses, mid-century village homes, and lake cabins share the features bats exploit: aging rooflines, gable vents without proper screening, worn chimney flashing, and soffit and fascia gaps that open as trim ages and pulls. Add the warm, undisturbed attic space these homes have in abundance and you’ve got ideal maternity habitat.
There’s an ecological piece too. This is insect-rich country — rivers, lakes, wetlands, cropland, and woodlots all producing the moths, mosquitoes, and beetles bats eat — so the region supports healthy foraging, and a colony that finds a good roof does well here. That’s genuinely a good thing for the landscape; bats are voracious insect predators and worth having around. The goal is never to wipe them out, just to get them off your roof and keep the guano out of your attic, then let them go on eating bugs somewhere that isn’t your insulation. Humane exclusion does exactly that, which is part of why it’s the law and the standard rather than extermination.
