What that traffic under the eave means
Stand back from the house on a warm afternoon and watch the underside of the roofline for a minute or two. If wasps are streaming in and out of one specific gap — a corner where the soffit meets the fascia, a seam in the aluminum soffit panels, a knothole or a spot where the wood has pulled away — you’re looking at the front door of a nest hidden inside the void. The wasps you see are foragers coming and going; the colony itself, and most of its population, is tucked up in the dark cavity behind the soffit where you can’t see it. That’s the defining feature of a soffit or eave nest and the reason it’s trickier than a nest hanging in the open: you’re dealing with a colony whose size and exact location you have to infer from the traffic at a single hole.
Soffit and eave voids are prime real estate for a wasp because they check every box a colony wants — dry, sheltered from wind and rain, warmed by the sun on the roof, and hard for predators (or people) to get at. A founding queen looking for a nest site in spring finds the gap, moves in, and builds. Through June and July the colony grows quietly, and by August and September it hits peak size and peak aggression, which is exactly when most people finally notice the traffic and call. What’s living up there
The three social wasps you’ll find in a Wisconsin soffit behave differently enough that identifying the tenant matters.
Paper wasps (Polistes) are the slender, long-legged wasps that build small, open, umbrella-shaped combs. In a soffit they’ll tuck the comb into a corner or a return. Colonies stay small — a few dozen to a couple hundred — and paper wasps are the least aggressive of the group, generally stinging only if the nest is directly threatened. These are the mildest soffit nests.
Yellowjackets (Vespula) are the stout, bright yellow-and-black wasps that cause most of the trouble, and they’re the classic soffit-void tenant. They build a large enclosed paper nest inside the cavity, and a single colony can swell to thousands of workers by late summer, expanding to fill the space. Yellowjackets are aggressive, quick to defend, and the ones most likely to turn a soffit nest into an emergency — especially the introduced German yellowjacket, which readily nests in wall and soffit voids of buildings and is the species behind most indoor break-ins.
Bald-faced hornets (Dolichovespula maculata), despite the name a large black-and-white yellowjacket relative, more often hang their gray football-shaped nest in the open, but they’ll sometimes work a soffit or wall corner too. When they do, expect a vigorous defense.
Why the fix is not “spray and seal”
This is the single most important thing to understand about a soffit or wall-void nest, and it’s where a lot of well-meaning homeowners create a much bigger problem: you must never seal the entry hole while the colony is alive.
The logic feels obvious — wasps are going in that hole, so plug the hole. But a trapped colony doesn’t die quietly. Cut off from their known exit, the workers dig and chew toward the nearest light and air, and in a soffit or wall that direction is frequently inward — through the ceiling drywall or the interior wall of the room on the other side. People who foam-seal a soffit hole in the evening sometimes wake up to wasps coming through a light fixture or a ceiling seam into a bedroom. An outdoor nuisance becomes an indoor swarm.
Store-bought aerosols make the same mistake in a different way. A can of wasp spray reaches only a few feet and, aimed into a soffit gap, rarely penetrates deep enough to reach the brood and the queen back in the void. What it reliably does is agitate an intact colony, sending defensive workers pouring out — often while the homeowner is standing on a ladder under the eave. Agitated wasps and a ladder is how people get badly stung and how ladder falls happen.
The correct sequence is: treat the colony through its own entrance so the product moves through the nest, confirm the colony is dead, and only then seal the opening — in that order, every time.
Why it keeps happening on your house
If you get a soffit nest year after year, the cause is usually structural. Older homes and farm buildings around Clintonville — the pre-war farmhouses, the mid-century village homes, the pole barns and sheds — tend to have plenty of soffit and fascia gaps, loose or damaged soffit panels, and openings where the roofline meets the wall. Each of those is a potential nest site. The goal isn’t to sterilize the property — it’s to keep nests out of the soffits and eaves where people actually pass.

In late spring, before workers arrive, walk the eaves, soffits, porch ceilings, and outbuilding rooflines and knock down the tiny starter nests a founding queen builds alone — that’s the easiest moment in the whole season to stop a colony, when it’s one queen and a handful of cells. Then close the openings: seal soffit, fascia, and siding gaps, replace loose or damaged soffit panels, and screen any roofline vents. The same sealing work that keeps wasps out of the soffit also blocks the cluster flies, Asian lady beetles, and mice that use those same roofline gaps in fall, so it pays off well beyond wasps.
When to call
Call for any yellowjacket or hornet nest in a soffit or eave, any nest you can’t see the size of, any nest near a door, deck, upstairs window, or other spot where people pass, and any nest on a second story or outbuilding that would put you on a ladder.
