When the wasps are living in your wall
Some of the more unsettling stinging-insect calls we get start the same way: a homeowner notices wasps slipping in and out of a small gap in the siding or around a window, and then, on a warm afternoon, hears a faint but unmistakable buzzing or rustling behind the wall. That combination — steady exterior traffic at one point plus sound or warmth on the inside of the wall — means a colony has set up inside the wall void, the hollow cavity between the exterior sheathing and the interior drywall. It’s the same basic situation as a nest in the soffit, but with the colony sitting directly against your living space, which raises the stakes.
The tenant is most often a yellowjacket, and specifically the introduced German yellowjacket (Vespula germanica), which unlike our native ground-nesting yellowjackets readily nests inside the wall voids and attics of buildings. That preference is exactly what makes these colonies dangerous: a nest that would be an outdoor nuisance in the ground becomes an indoor threat when it’s built into the structure of the house. Paper wasps and bald-faced hornets occasionally use a wall cavity too, but the German yellowjacket is the classic wall-void species and the reason this problem gets its own page. How they got in, and how the colony grows
It starts, as always, with a single overwintered queen in spring. Looking for a sheltered nest site, she finds a small exterior gap that opens into a cavity — a crack in the siding, an unsealed seam around a window or door frame, a utility or cable penetration, a weep hole in brick veneer, or an opening at the soffit or fascia that connects down into the wall. She slips in, builds the first paper cells against the back of the sheathing or on the framing, and raises the first batch of workers herself. Once those workers mature, the colony takes off, building a large enclosed paper nest that expands to fill the void. By late summer a wall colony can hold thousands of workers, all hidden inside the wall, with only the traffic at the entry gap to show for it.
Older homes make this easy. The pre-war farmhouses and mid-century village homes around Clintonville often have balloon framing — wall cavities that run uninterrupted from the sill plate all the way up, giving a colony a tall, roomy void to build in — along with block or fieldstone foundations, wood siding that’s cupped or pulled loose over the decades, and plenty of unsealed gaps around windows, doors, and utility penetrations. Why you must never seal the hole first
This is the one thing to take away from this page, because getting it wrong turns a bad situation into a genuinely awful one: do not seal the entry gap while the colony is alive.
The reasoning is the same as for a soffit nest but more urgent, because in a wall the colony is pressed right against your rooms. Cut off from their known exit, trapped yellowjackets don’t quietly die — they chew and dig toward the nearest light and air, and from inside a wall that direction is very often inward, through the soft drywall, toward the interior of the house. Homeowners who foam or caulk a wall entry in the evening sometimes wake to yellowjackets coming through an electrical outlet, a light fixture, a baseboard gap, or a seam in the drywall into a bedroom. Even without any sealing, a large wall colony under pressure late in the season sometimes breaks through into the living space on its own — which is why a sudden appearance of wasps inside the house in August or September is a classic sign of a wall-void nest.
Store-bought aerosols create the same risk from the other direction. Sprayed into the entry gap, they rarely reach the brood and queen deep in the void, so they agitate an intact colony rather than killing it — and an agitated wall colony is exactly the one most likely to push inward. The temptation to then plug the hole “to keep them from coming back” is what completes the disaster.
The only correct sequence is: treat the colony through its own entrance so the product moves through the nest, confirm the colony is dead, and only then seal the opening. Kill first, seal second, every time.
Why it keeps happening at the same spot
If wasps get into the same wall year after year, the reason is structural and simple: the gap that let a queen in is still open. The colony itself is annual — it dies completely at hard frost, only new queens survive winter, and the nest is never reused — but a cavity reachable through an unsealed exterior gap stays attractive, and a new queen finds the same opening the following spring. The fix for the yearly repeat isn’t treating the wasps again each summer; it’s sealing that entry once the colony is dead, and closing the other siding, window, and soffit gaps around it so the next queen has fewer options.

Occasionally a large dead nest draws secondary scavengers like beetles as it breaks down, but the practical priorities are killing the colony and sealing the entry.
Prevention
Preventing wall-void colonies is really about exclusion, the same sealing work that keeps out the fall invaders. Walk the exterior and close the gaps a founding queen would use: caulk around window and door frames, seal utility and cable penetrations, repair loose or cupped siding, and tighten soffit and fascia gaps that connect down into the walls. In late spring, before workers arrive, keep an eye out for early traffic at any exterior gap and deal with a starter nest while it’s still just a queen and a few cells — the easiest possible time to stop one. The same gap-sealing that shuts wasps out of your walls also blocks the cluster flies, Asian lady beetles, and mice that exploit those openings in fall, so it’s worth doing thoroughly.
