Farm country where the pests come out of the fields
The Town of Angelica covers roughly 36.6 square miles of southeastern Shawano County at about 801 feet of elevation — open, gently rolling farm country with only a scattering of surface water and a population that has long hovered around forty-some people per square mile. There is no village center in the usual sense. Spring (March–May): thaw, swarmers, and stirring rodents
When the frost comes out of the ground and the fields start to green, the mice that spent the winter in your walls, sheds, and grain storage get active and start breeding. Homeowners who thought the fall invasion was over suddenly hear scratching again in the walls and find droppings back in the pantry. This isn’t a new invasion — it’s the population that overwintered inside, now moving.
Spring is also carpenter ant season in Angelica’s older farmhouses. These homes tend to have decades of small roof, gutter, and plumbing leaks, damp sill plates over fieldstone or block, and big shade trees in the yard — exactly the moisture-softened wood carpenter ants excavate to nest in. In April and May, winged swarmers show up at south-facing windows, and large black ants appear indoors. If you’re seeing them while it’s still cold outside, the nest is living inside the heated structure, not foraging in from the yard. Catching that early saves real structural repair. By late spring, paper wasp and yellowjacket queens are scouting nest sites under barn eaves and porch soffits, and blacklegged ticks get active in the brushy edges where lawn meets pasture and woods.
Summer (June–August): flies, stingers, and the barn
Summer in Angelica is fly and stinging-insect season, and on a working farm that means more than a couple of house flies. Stable flies, house flies, and face flies breed in manure, spilled feed, and wet bedding around dairy and livestock operations, and populations can explode by midsummer. Around the house, wasps and hornets build under eaves, in wall voids, and in the ground, reaching their largest and most defensive size by August — which is when most stings and most of our wasp and hornet calls happen.
Summer is also the one stretch when we cannot seal bats out. Wisconsin protects its bats, and the DNR requires that bat exits stay open June 1 through July 31 while flightless pups are in the roost. If you find bats in the farmhouse attic or the barn in July, the move is to plan the exclusion for later — not to seal the building and trap pups inside, which is illegal and creates a far worse mess. Fall (September–October): the rodent push and the invasion
This is the defining season in Angelica and the reason most people here call us. When the corn and beans come off and the nights turn cold, two things hit at once. Field mice and deer mice leave the harvested fields and fencerows and move toward the nearest warm structure — and an old farmhouse offers dozens of ways in. At the same time, fall invaders mass on the sunny walls: cluster flies, boxelder bugs, and Asian lady beetles, all working into gaps to overwinter in wall voids and attics.
Cluster flies deserve a word, because Angelica gets them badly and people misread them. They don’t breed in garbage — their larvae parasitize earthworms in the soil, so a house surrounded by lawn and field produces a local population no matter how clean it is. Out here, that’s every house. The fix is an early-fall exterior treatment of the walls they gather on plus sealing entry points, not chasing them with a spray can in the kitchen come January. Same logic applies to the mice: fall is when sealing pays off.
Winter (November–February): what’s already inside
By winter the outdoor movement is done, and whatever got in during fall is now your problem. Mice that found a warm, food-rich nest in a wall, a grain bin, or a closed-up shed breed year-round once inside — a few in November become a real infestation by February if the entry points stay open. Let a January sun warm a farmhouse wall for an afternoon and the cluster flies wintering inside it wake and crawl toward the light at the windows. Deer mice in seldom-used spaces are a genuine hantavirus concern, so winter cleanup of droppings should be done damp and careful, not swept dry. Winter work in Angelica is mostly rodent exclusion, cleanup, and knocking down the fall invaders.
Angelica’s building stock and how pests exploit it
Pests don’t find their way in at random — they use specific weaknesses, and Angelica’s buildings have a distinct set of them.
The older farmhouses are the classic challenge. Many sit on fieldstone or block foundations with unsealed sill plates, and a lot of them are balloon-framed, meaning the wall cavities run uninterrupted from the basement to the attic. That’s an open highway: a mouse that slips in at the sill ends up nesting in the attic insulation, and cluster flies that enter at a soffit gap turn up in an upstairs bedroom. Across Angelica’s 36 square miles, nothing pays back a careful, top-to-bottom exclusion inspection like one of these old balloon-framed farmhouses.
The pole barns, machine sheds, and grain storage are the other half. Big sliding doors never seal tight at the bottom corners, service penetrations for water and power leave gaps, and stored grain and spilled feed are a standing invitation. These outbuildings are usually the reservoir that keeps re-supplying the house with rodents, which is why we treat the whole farmstead as one system rather than working on the house alone.
And the newer rural ranch and modular homes scattered through the town are tighter, but still leak at garage-door corners, dryer and utility penetrations, and the joint where siding meets the foundation. We inspect each on its own terms.
Geography and ecology: fields, fencerows, and woodlots
Angelica is farmland first, and that shapes everything. The open fields are a rodent reservoir that floods toward buildings every fall. The fencerows and grassy ditches are travel corridors that let mice and voles move across the landscape under cover and reach your foundation. The worm-rich cropland and lawn soil is exactly what cluster flies need to breed, which is why open farm country gets them worse than town does. And the woodlots scattered through the town are where carpenter ants keep their outdoor parent nests, where squirrels and raccoons stage before they find your roofline, and where ticks live in the brushy edge.

With this many older buildings sitting close to woods and field, wildlife work is routine here, not a sideline. Bats roost in farmhouse attics, barn peaks, and behind fascia. Raccoons den in chimneys and torn soffits — especially females looking for a spot to raise young in spring — and they’ll tear into a barn readily. Squirrels chew into attics at weak roof edges. On a farm, the pest picture doesn’t stop at rodents and fall invaders — there’s a whole category tied to stored grain, feed, and pantry goods that town homes rarely deal with. Indian meal moths, sawtoothed grain beetles, and various weevils get into stored corn, oats, and mixed feed, and they’ll move from a bin or feed room into the house pantry given the chance. Warm feed rooms let these populations run year-round, long after the outdoor insects have gone dormant. The tell is usually webbing in a feed sack, small beetles in the flour, or moths fluttering up when you open a bin — and the fix is never just fogging the room. It means finding and pulling the infested source material, cleaning the residue out of seams and cracks where larvae pupate, and then treating, in that order. Getting the sequence backward is why these problems come back.
Grain storage also ties directly to the rodent picture. A bin or feed room that’s feeding an insect population is usually feeding mice too, and the two problems reinforce each other. Why DIY usually falls short on an Angelica farm
Plenty of Angelica farmers are handy and used to fixing their own problems, and a lot of the pest work here starts as a do-it-yourself effort. Real control on a farm means matching the treatment to the pest’s biology and, above all, doing the exclusion work — sealing the building so the next wave can’t get in. That’s slower and less dramatic than a fogger, and it’s the only thing that actually holds.
