What “gnats” really are
“I’ve got gnats” is one of the most common calls we get, and it’s also one of the most misleading, because the tiny flying insects people lump together as gnats are usually one of three completely different flies, each breeding in a completely different place. Get the identification wrong and you’ll chase the problem forever; get it right and the fix is usually straightforward. So the first and most important thing about small flies is this: figure out which one you have.
The three you’ll almost certainly be dealing with in a Northeast Wisconsin home are:
- Fungus gnats — small, dark, delicate flies that breed in the damp soil of houseplants.
- Fruit flies — small tan flies with (often) red eyes that breed in ripe and fermenting produce, recycling, and sugary residue.
- Drain flies — fuzzy, moth-like flies that breed in the organic film inside drains.
Every one of these is a breeding-source problem, which is the single most important thing to understand about small flies. The adults you swat at are just the visible end of a life cycle happening somewhere you’re probably not looking — in the plant soil, in a forgotten piece of produce or a recycling bin, or inside a drain pipe. You cannot spray your way out of a small-fly problem, because spraying kills adults and leaves the larvae maturing in the source. The only thing that works is finding and eliminating the source that’s producing them. That’s why the rest of this page is organized around telling the three apart and hunting down where each one breeds.
Identification: telling the three apart
The fastest way to identify a small fly is by where it congregates, because each type stays close to its breeding source.
Fungus gnats are small — about an eighth of an inch — dark, and delicate, with long legs and long antennae, looking a bit like tiny mosquitoes. They’re weak, fluttery fliers, and the tell is that you’ll see them around potted plants, running across the soil surface, and rising in a little cloud when you water or disturb the plant. They’re drawn to windows and screens too. If your small flies are centered on houseplants, they’re fungus gnats.
Fruit flies are small, tan to yellowish-brown, often with distinctive red eyes, and they hover and dart around ripe fruit, the fruit bowl, recycling bins, trash, and drains — anywhere fermenting, sugary material is. They fly more purposefully than fungus gnats and cluster tightly around their food source. If your small flies are on the kitchen counter around produce or the recycling, they’re fruit flies.
Drain flies (also called moth flies or sewer gnats) are the easiest to identify: small, gray to tan, and distinctly fuzzy and moth-like, with rounded wings held roof-like over the body. They don’t fly well — they move in short, weak hops — and they rest on walls, ceilings, and surfaces near sinks, tubs, showers, and floor drains. If your small flies are fuzzy and sitting on the bathroom wall near a drain, they’re drain flies.
Getting this right is not a technicality — it’s the whole job. Each fly breeds in a different source, so the identification tells you exactly where to hunt. Misidentify the fly and you’ll clean and treat the wrong place and get nowhere.
How do gnats and small flies live and breed in Wisconsin?
All three are true flies with a complete egg-larva-pupa-adult life cycle, and all three breed fast in the warm, stable conditions of a heated home — but the specifics differ in ways that shape the fix.
Fungus gnats lay their eggs in consistently damp potting soil and organic growing media. The larvae — small, translucent, with a dark head — live in the top inch or two of the soil, feeding on fungi, algae, decaying organic matter, and, when numerous, tender plant roots. The cycle from egg to adult runs about three to four weeks depending on temperature. The key biological fact is their dependence on wet soil: the larvae need consistently moist conditions, so overwatered plants are what sustain them, and soil that’s allowed to dry out breaks the cycle. Because they live entirely indoors on houseplants, they’re a year-round problem, and they often flare up in fall and winter when plants come indoors and get overwatered in low light.
Fruit flies breed in fermenting organic material — overripe fruit and vegetables, spilled juice or beer, the sugary film in recycling and trash, and the gunk in drains and disposals. Their life cycle is remarkably fast: a female lays hundreds of eggs on the surface of fermenting material, and in a warm kitchen the cycle from egg to adult can complete in about a week or less. That speed, and the sheer number of eggs, is why a fruit fly problem seems to explode overnight from what looked like nothing — a single overlooked potato or a filmy recycling bin can produce a swarm in days. It’s also why you have to eliminate every source; leave one and they rebound fast.
Drain flies breed in the gelatinous organic film that coats the inside of drains, traps, and pipe walls, as well as in any chronically wet organic sludge — condensate pans, sewage, damp organic buildup. The larvae live in and feed on that film. The cycle runs about one to three weeks. The defining fact is that the breeding site is inside the drain, clinging to the pipe walls, which is exactly why pouring liquids down the drain fails to control them — the liquid rushes past without removing the film. Only mechanically removing the film eliminates the breeding site.
The common thread across all three is that they’re indoor breeders with fast cycles and specific, findable sources. That’s good news: unlike an outdoor invader, an indoor breeder can be eliminated by shutting off its breeding site.
When are gnats and small flies active in Northeast Wisconsin?
Small flies are largely a year-round indoor problem, since they breed in the controlled climate of a heated home, but each has a seasonal rhythm in Northeast Wisconsin worth knowing.
Fungus gnats often peak in fall and winter. That’s when houseplants that summered outdoors come back inside (sometimes bringing gnats in the soil with them), when reduced winter light and lower plant water use lead people to overwater, and when the soil in a pot stays damp longer. A lot of “why do I suddenly have gnats in January” calls are fungus gnats in overwatered winter houseplants.
Fruit flies peak in late summer and fall, tracking the harvest and the produce cycle. This is garden and orchard season in this region — tomatoes, apples, and produce coming in and ripening on counters, canning and food-preservation activity, and more organic material around. Warm late-summer kitchens speed their fast life cycle, so August through October is prime fruit fly season, though a warm kitchen can produce them any time of year.
Drain flies are the least seasonal, since drain film builds up regardless of the calendar, but they’re often noticed around rarely used drains — a basement floor drain, a guest bathroom, a seasonal cabin’s plumbing — where film accumulates undisturbed and traps dry out. Cabins around the Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes that sit closed and then get opened are a classic setting: the drains have sat with standing film and dried traps, and drain flies (and their breeding sites) are waiting.
So while all three run year-round, fungus gnats lean fall/winter, fruit flies lean late summer/fall, and drain flies show up whenever a drain’s film has been left to build — which in seasonal and low-use plumbing tends to be after a period of disuse.
What conditions bring gnats and small flies to a property here?
Small flies are an indoor breeding problem, but Northeast Wisconsin’s homes and habits shape where the sources show up.
Drain flies are tied to plumbing, and the region’s older housing stock works in their favor. Older farmhouses and village homes have more drains, older pipes, slower-moving plumbing, and — importantly — basement floor drains that are used rarely and accumulate film while their traps dry out. A dried-out floor-drain trap is both a breeding site (film in the drain) and an open door (no water barrier), so basement drain-fly problems are common in older local homes. Seasonal cabins with plumbing that sits unused for months are the same story amplified. This overlaps with the general damp-basement theme of this region: the same lower levels that draw silverfish and centipedes often have the neglected floor drains that breed drain flies.
Fungus gnats are tied to houseplants, and they flare with the region’s long indoor season. Northeast Wisconsin winters keep people and their plants inside for many months, and the combination of overwintering plants, low light, and a tendency to overwater in winter creates ideal fungus-gnat conditions. Homes and cabins with lots of plants, and greenhouses or plant-starting setups in spring, are where they concentrate.
Fruit flies are tied to produce and food handling, and this is farm and garden country. Home gardens, orchards, roadside produce, canning and preserving, and the general abundance of ripening fruit and vegetables in late summer give fruit flies plenty to breed in. Recycling and trash areas, and the sugary residue in them, are year-round sources.
The unifying theme is that these are source-and-moisture problems: damp soil, fermenting material, and wet drain film. Find the damp, organic source, and you’ve found the flies.
How do you know you have gnats and small flies?
The signs are largely the flies themselves, located by their breeding source:
- Fungus gnats: small dark flies around potted plants, running on the soil surface, rising when watered or disturbed; also drawn to nearby windows. Larvae (small translucent worms with dark heads) visible in the top layer of soggy soil in heavy cases.
- Fruit flies: small tan/red-eyed flies clustering around produce, the fruit bowl, recycling, trash, and drains; a swarm that seems to appear suddenly around fermenting material.
- Drain flies: fuzzy, moth-like flies resting on walls near sinks, tubs, showers, and floor drains, flying in short weak hops; often most numerous first thing in the morning near a drain.
- A source you can find: overwatered plant soil, a piece of forgotten produce or a filmy recycling bin, or an organic film you can scrape from inside a drain — confirming which fly and where it’s breeding.
A useful diagnostic trick for drain flies: tape a clear cup or a piece of tape (sticky side down) over a suspect drain overnight; if adults are emerging from that drain, you’ll catch them and confirm the source.
Are gnats and small flies dangerous?
The three differ in how much they matter beyond nuisance.
Fungus gnats are essentially a nuisance to people — they don’t bite, sting, or spread disease to humans, and the adults are just an annoyance. The real harm is to houseplants: in large numbers, the larvae feed on roots and can stunt or damage plants, especially seedlings and cuttings. So the risk is horticultural, not a household-health issue.
Fruit flies are the most significant on sanitation grounds. Because they move between decaying, fermenting material and the surfaces where you prepare and eat food, they can carry and deposit bacteria and contaminate food. They don’t bite, but in a kitchen — and especially in any food-handling business — they’re a genuine contamination concern, not just an annoyance. That’s why removing them fully, not just tolerating them, matters.
Drain flies breed in drain and sometimes sewage-associated film, and in large numbers they can carry bacteria from that material onto surfaces. They don’t bite people, but a heavy drain-fly population is both an unpleasant nuisance and a mild sanitation concern, and it’s a sign of organic buildup (and possibly a plumbing issue like a cracked line) that’s worth addressing. In rare cases, large numbers of shed drain-fly bodies can contribute to indoor allergen load.
None of the three are dangerous in the way a stinging or disease-vectoring pest is, but fruit flies and drain flies carry enough of a sanitation concern — particularly around food — that they’re worth eliminating rather than living with.
Why doesn’t DIY work on gnats and small flies?
Small flies defeat a lot of DIY effort for one overriding reason: people treat the adults and ignore the breeding source, or they treat the wrong source because they’ve misidentified the fly.
Swatting, spraying, and hanging traps kills or catches some adults, but the larvae are still developing in the soil, the produce, or the drain film, maturing into new adults on a cycle of days to a few weeks. You can knock down the visible cloud and have it back in short order because nothing has changed about where they’re breeding. With fruit flies especially, the fast life cycle means even a brief lapse or a single missed source repopulates the whole problem.
Misidentification is the other big failure. Someone with fungus gnats cleans the kitchen and removes the fruit — and the gnats keep coming, because they’re in the plant soil. Someone with drain flies scrubs the counters and takes out the trash — and the flies persist, because they’re breeding inside the drain. Treating the wrong source feels like effort but changes nothing.
And even with the right fly identified, DIY often misses hidden sources. Fruit flies breeding in the film of a recycling bin, a spill behind the stove, or a garbage disposal; drain flies in a basement floor drain, a rarely used guest bath, or a cracked drain line under the slab; fungus gnats in every pot in the house rather than the one you noticed. Miss one and the problem continues. The reason professional source-hunting works is that it’s systematic — identify the fly, then find and eliminate every source of that type, including the ones that aren’t obvious.

Treat and set up sanitation. Follow up. Because small flies breed fast and hidden sources are easy to miss, we re-check to confirm the flies are actually gone and no source was overlooked. We’d rather find the last hidden drain or spill than declare victory and have the problem rebound in a week.
How do you keep gnats and small flies out?
Preventing small flies is about denying each type its breeding source. Because the three differ, so do the measures:
For fungus gnats: Stop overwatering — let the top inch or two of houseplant soil dry out completely between waterings, which is the single most effective step. Ensure pots drain well and don’t leave standing water in saucers. Use quality, well-draining potting mix, and consider a layer of sand or a soil cover to discourage egg-laying. Isolate and inspect new or incoming plants before bringing them in.
For fruit flies: Refrigerate or promptly use ripe produce, and don’t leave fruit and vegetables out to overripen. Rinse recycling before it goes in the bin and empty and clean recycling and trash regularly. Wipe up spills, especially sugary ones, and clean under and behind appliances. Run and clean the garbage disposal, and don’t leave damp rags or mop water sitting.
For drain flies: Keep drains clean by periodically scrubbing the inside of the pipe with a drain brush and using an enzyme drain treatment to digest organic film before it builds up. Run water in rarely used drains and keep floor-drain traps charged with water (which also blocks the flies from coming up). Address slow drains and any cracked or leaking lines.
General: Keep the home’s damp organic buildup in check, fix leaks and moisture problems, and — for the outdoor biting gnats and midges that are a separate issue — maintain screens and door seals. But for the three indoor breeders, prevention is overwhelmingly about eliminating the wet, organic sources they need.
