Sowbugs & Pillbugs in Northeast Wisconsin

Sowbugs and pillbugs are gray, armored crustaceans that live under mulch, leaf litter, and landscape timbers and wander into Northeast Wisconsin basements and garages when the ground gets wet. They cannot survive long indoors. Finding them alive week after week means there is standing moisture BugBoss should look at.

The gray bugs on the basement floor

The classic version of this call is not about live insects at all. Somebody sweeps the basement or the garage and there they are again — a dozen or two small gray armored things, curled up, dead, along the base of the wall. They sweep them up. A week later there is another dozen.

Those are sowbugs and pillbugs, and the fact that they keep turning up dead is not a coincidence or a mystery. It is the single most informative thing about them: they cannot survive in your house. Every one of them walked in from outside, dried out, and died within a day or two.

Which reframes the problem. You do not have an infestation. You have a supply line — a large population living in damp ground somewhere very close to the building, and a set of gaps at floor level letting a steady trickle of them inside. Deal with those two things and the sweeping stops.

They are not insects

This is not pedantry; it explains everything they do.

Sowbugs and pillbugs are terrestrial isopods — crustaceans. Their nearest relatives are crabs, shrimp, and lobsters, not beetles. They are one of the very few crustacean groups that made a full transition to life on land, and they did it incompletely. They still breathe through gill-like structures on the underside of the body, and those structures only work when they are damp.

That single inherited feature dictates the whole story:

  • They must live in continuously moist places
  • They dry out and die quickly in normal indoor air
  • They cannot breed indoors
  • They are active mostly at night, when humidity is highest
  • They are driven out by flooding and by drought alike, because both destroy the narrow damp band they need

Other details follow from the crustacean ancestry too. They have seven pairs of legs rather than an insect’s six. They wear a segmented armored shell and molt it in two halves — back half first, front half a few days later — which is why you sometimes find one looking half-gray and half-white and apparently unwell. And the female carries her eggs in a fluid-filled brood pouch on her underside, essentially a tiny portable aquarium, releasing miniature versions of herself.

Sowbug or pillbug?

Pillbug (Armadillidium vulgare): rolls into a tight complete sphere when disturbed, more domed shell, no tail appendages. The roly-poly of childhood.

Sowbug (Oniscus and related genera): cannot roll into a ball — it flattens and clamps down instead, has a flatter profile, and carries two small tail-like projections at the rear.

Both are gray to slate-brown, roughly a quarter to half an inch long, and armored in overlapping plates. Both eat decaying plant matter. Both want the same damp harborage, both die indoors at the same rate, and both are managed identically. So while it is satisfying to know which you have, it changes nothing about what to do.

The genuine misidentification worth avoiding is millipedes, which arrive in similar places at similar times. Millipedes are longer, more cylindrical, darker, and have many more legs — two pairs per segment, giving that rippling motion. They coil into a flat spiral rather than a ball. And they arrive in mass migrations in autumn, whereas sowbugs and pillbugs trickle in year-round whenever the ground is wet. Different animal, similar message about moisture.

When are sowbugs and pillbugs active in Northeast Wisconsin?

Spring melt is the first big push. Saturated ground, water moving toward foundations, and a winter’s worth of accumulated leaf litter finally thawing out. Late March into May is reliably busy.

Summer is event-driven and works in both directions. Heavy rain floods the harborage and pushes them out. A prolonged dry spell does the same thing for the opposite reason — as the open ground bakes, they concentrate in whatever damp remains, which is very often the shaded soil right against a foundation or under the mulch by the house.

Autumn is the second sustained peak, and often the largest. Falling leaves pile against foundations, autumn rain keeps everything wet, and the population that built up over summer is at its maximum. September and October produce a lot of these calls.

Winter quiets outdoors as the ground freezes, but a heated house with a damp crawlspace or a wet basement corner can keep producing them all winter. Midwinter sowbugs mean an indoor damp source, not an outdoor one.

Where do sowbugs and pillbugs come from around here?

The habitat is always within a few feet of where you are finding them, and it is always the same short list.

Mulch beds against the foundation. Deep mulch right up to the siding is textbook sowbug habitat with a direct route to the wall — the single most common contributor on residential properties.

Leaf litter. Leaves banked against the foundation over winter, or in beds nobody clears, hold moisture and decompose into exactly what these animals eat.

Landscape timbers, boards, and stones. Anything lying flat on soil creates a damp dark space underneath. Landscape timbers and railroad ties along a bed next to the house are reliable producers.

Firewood stacked against the wall. Damp underneath, decomposing bark, direct contact with the foundation. Firewood against a house causes several problems at once and this is one of them.

Window wells. Debris collects, moisture holds, animals fall in and cannot climb out, and there is a basement window right there. Wells are both a habitat and a trap.

Compost heaps and garden beds close to the house.

Damp crawlspaces with bare soil. The one place they can genuinely persist indoors, because it is not really indoors as far as they are concerned.

Concrete aprons, patios, and slabs that stay wet along the edge, particularly on the shaded north side.

How do you know you have sowbugs and pillbugs?

  • Gray armored bugs, usually dead, along basement and garage walls
  • Live ones under mulch, boards, stones, and timbers when you lift them
  • Numbers rising sharply after heavy rain or during spring melt
  • Accumulations in window wells
  • Concentrations in the garage, mudroom, or utility room rather than living space
  • Activity along the shaded, damper side of the house
  • Live individuals surviving indoors for extended periods — this one means a genuinely damp interior space and is worth investigating
  • Damp sill plates, water staining at the base of foundation walls, or bare damp crawlspace soil

Are sowbugs and pillbugs dangerous?

There is essentially none. Sowbugs and pillbugs do not bite, sting, transmit disease, damage structures, chew wood or fabric, or infest food. They cannot harm people or pets in any way. They are among the most genuinely harmless animals that ever gets called in as a pest.

Two qualifications worth stating.

They can be a minor garden nuisance in very damp, heavily mulched conditions, where large populations occasionally feed on seedlings and on soft ripe fruit resting on wet soil. Usually they are a net benefit to soil, and the fix when they are not is cultural rather than chemical.

And their presence is a moisture signal — which is the part that actually matters. A steady indoor supply, or live individuals persisting inside, means there is sustained dampness at or under the building. That same dampness produces mold, wood rot, sill plate decay, and the whole family of moisture-driven pests: springtails, centipedes, silverfish, millipedes, and eventually carpenter ants in softened wood. The pillbugs are the cheapest possible early warning, and they are worth listening to.

Why doesn’t DIY work on sowbugs and pillbugs?

Treating it as an insect problem. Interior spraying kills animals that were already dying anyway and does nothing about the outdoor population or the entry routes.

Sealing without drying. Sealing helps and is worth doing, but a large population in damp mulch pressed against the foundation will keep finding gaps. Remove the harborage and the pressure drops enormously.

Missing the harborage because it is under something. People look at the mulch bed and see nothing, because sowbugs are underneath the mulch, under the boards, under the stones. You have to lift things.

Ignoring the window wells. Frequently the single biggest local source on a house, and almost always overlooked.

Treating the whole yard. Unnecessary and ineffective. The relevant zone is the strip of ground within a couple of feet of the foundation.

Not asking why they are surviving. Live sowbugs indoors week after week means the interior has a damp problem. That is a finding, not a nuisance, and spraying it hides the signal.

How does BugBoss handle sowbugs and pillbugs?

1. Identify. Sowbug, pillbug, or millipede — and confirm it is not something that actually needs different handling. This takes moments and it settles what the rest of the visit is about.

2. Inspect the foundation strip. The two-to-three-foot band of ground around the building is where the population lives. Mulch depth and placement, leaf litter, boards, stones, timbers, firewood, grading, downspout discharge, hose bibs, window wells, and the shaded side. We lift things, because that is where they are.

3. Inspect inside. Where they are getting in and, more importantly, whether anything indoors is damp enough for them to survive in — crawlspace soil and vapor barrier, basement walls and slab, sill plates, sump, floor drains, and any water staining.

4. Seal the ground-level routes. Foundation cracks, sill plate gaps, utility penetrations, garage door bottom seals, thresholds, and basement window and window well seals. Ground level is where this battle is fought.

5. Treat the perimeter where warranted. After a heavy season, or where pressure is high while habitat corrections are underway. Targeted at the harborage band, not the whole property, and never presented as the fix on its own.

6. Give you the habitat plan. Specific and prioritized: which mulch to pull back, which timbers to lift, which downspout to extend, whether the window wells need clearing and covering, whether the crawlspace needs a vapor barrier. We say clearly which items are ours and which belong to a landscaper, an excavator, or a plumber.

7. Check back. Particularly where a drainage or grading correction was part of the plan, since the result only shows after the next serious rain.

How do you keep sowbugs and pillbugs out?

  • Create a dry strip against the foundation. Bare soil or gravel, 12 to 24 inches wide, with mulch pulled back from the wall. The most effective single change available.
  • Keep mulch shallow. Two to three inches is plenty; deep mulch is habitat.
  • Clear leaf litter from against the foundation, especially in autumn.
  • Lift boards, stones, and timbers off the soil near the house, or move them away entirely.
  • Move firewood off the ground and away from the wall.
  • Clear and cover window wells, and add drainage where they hold water.
  • Extend downspouts well clear of the foundation and regrade so ground falls away from the house.
  • Fix leaking hose bibs and any plumbing keeping soil wet.
  • Put a vapor barrier over bare crawlspace soil and ventilate or dehumidify the space.
  • Seal at floor level — foundation cracks, sill plate gaps, garage door seals, thresholds, and utility penetrations.

Why do I keep finding them dead in the basement?

Are they insects?

No, and this is genuinely the key to understanding them. Sowbugs and pillbugs are crustaceans — terrestrial isopods, far more closely related to crabs, lobsters, and shrimp than to any insect. They have seven pairs of legs rather than six, a segmented armored shell, and gill-like breathing structures that are a direct inheritance from aquatic ancestors. Those gills are why they are so tightly bound to moisture and why they die so quickly indoors. Once you know you are dealing with a land crustacean, their behavior stops being puzzling.

What do sowbugs and pillbugs eat?

Decaying plant material, almost exclusively — rotting leaves, decomposing mulch, soft dead wood, and the fungal growth on all of it. They are decomposers and genuinely useful in a garden or compost heap, breaking down organic matter and returning nutrients to the soil. Occasionally, in a very damp greenhouse or under a heavily mulched bed, large numbers will nibble on seedlings and soft ripe fruit sitting on wet soil, but that is a minor and situational issue. Indoors they have essentially nothing to eat, which is another reason they cannot establish.

Do they bite or get in food?

Neither. Their mouthparts scrape soft decaying plant tissue and cannot break human skin. They have no interest in and no ability to infest stored food — they need decomposing, moist plant matter, not dry pantry goods. They will not get into cereal, flour, or pet food. If something is biting people or getting into your food, it is a different animal and worth identifying properly, because pillbugs are frequently blamed for problems they are physically incapable of causing.

Why do I get them after heavy rain?

Because rain floods the spaces they live in. Sowbugs and pillbugs occupy the thin damp layer under mulch, leaf litter, boards, stones, and landscape timbers, and when that layer becomes saturated they are driven out and move across the surface in numbers. If your foundation is in the way, they arrive at the wall and push through any ground-level gap they find. The same thing happens in reverse during a dry spell, when they seek out the last damp places available — which is often the shaded soil right against your foundation.

How do I stop them getting in?

Work on the strip of ground immediately against the house, because that is where the population lives. Pull mulch back to leave a dry gap of bare soil or gravel against the foundation, keep mulch shallow rather than piled, remove leaf litter and lift boards, stones, and landscape timbers off the ground next to the wall, extend downspouts well clear, and regrade so water falls away. Then seal the ground-level routes in: foundation cracks, sill plate gaps, gaps under doors and garage doors, and window well seals. Drying the strip does most of the work.

Can they infest a house the way other pests do?

No, and this is genuinely good news. Sowbugs and pillbugs cannot complete their life cycle indoors — the air is too dry for them to survive, let alone breed — so a true indoor infestation is essentially impossible in a normal heated house. What you have instead is a continuous supply of arrivals from a large outdoor population. The exception is a chronically wet space: a crawlspace with bare damp soil, a flooding basement, or a permanently damp utility room can be wet enough to sustain them, and that is a moisture problem needing attention regardless.

Why are there so many in my window wells?

Window wells are close to perfect habitat and a natural trap. They collect leaves and organic debris, they hold moisture, they are shaded, and once an animal drops in it usually cannot climb the smooth sides to get out. So the well accumulates both a resident population and a heap of trapped arrivals, right next to a basement window that may have a gap in its seal. Clearing debris out of the wells, adding drainage, and fitting covers is one of the more effective single steps on a house that gets a lot of them.

Are pillbugs a sign of a bigger problem?

They are a reliable sign of excess moisture against or under the building, which sometimes is a bigger problem. A few after a heavy storm is normal and means nothing. A steady supply week after week, or live ones surviving indoors for extended periods, means there is somewhere damp enough to support them — a wet crawlspace, a chronically damp basement corner, water pooling against the foundation, or a leak. That underlying dampness leads to mold, wood rot, and other moisture pests, so it is worth chasing for reasons beyond the pillbugs.

Do I need pesticide for sowbugs and pillbugs?

Usually not as the main answer. A perimeter treatment can knock down a heavy outdoor population and reduce the pressure while habitat corrections are being made, and that has its place after a bad season. But the treatment is temporary and the outdoor population is effectively unlimited, so relying on spray alone means repeating it indefinitely. Removing damp harborage against the foundation and sealing ground-level entry does far more, lasts far longer, and costs less over time.

Will they damage my garden?

Generally they help it. As decomposers they break down organic matter and improve soil, and most gardeners are better off with them than without. The exception is in very damp conditions with heavy mulch, where large populations will occasionally feed on seedlings, soft ripe strawberries, or fruit resting on wet soil. If that is happening, the fix is cultural — reduce mulch depth around vulnerable plants, improve air movement and drainage, and keep ripening fruit off wet ground — rather than treating the whole bed.

Why are they in my garage and mudroom?

Because these are the transitional spaces, and they are the easiest to enter. Garage doors have imperfect bottom seals along a wide span at ground level, mudrooms and utility rooms often sit at or below grade, both tend to be cooler and damper than the rest of the house, and both are usually right next to mulched beds or a concrete apron that stays wet. That combination of an easy entry and a slightly damp interior is why the sowbug count in a garage is often ten times what it is in the kitchen.
